Overburn question

Ok, I searched the forum before I posted this question...didnt find anything...
I just bought my first CD burner..Plextor 482448U USB2 external..I use the latest Nero s/w. I am usung Maxell CD-R disc 40x....(100 for 7bucks )

I cant seem to overburn at all..I checked the box under preferences in nero and the Plextor manual says the burner is capable of overburing but if I try to burn anything over 700mbs, I get an error that "there is not enough space to burn this compliation ,etc...." We are talking only a 703 mb file. Am I doing something wrong? Also is it importan to verify the data on the disc? I mean if its corrupt there nothing I can do anyways right? It adds another 15 mins to my burn time.
One last thing, my MB is uses USB 1.1, is it worth it to buy a USB 2 adapter card?

If it is corrupt and the data is important to you, then yes, there is something you can do: burn another copy.

I don't generally use Nero's verify switch on every burn. Rather, when I get a batch of discs I check the first few I burn with tools such as CD Speed's Quality Check or CDCheck to verify that they are okay. Then I usually just trust that if the first few are okay, all the rest will be as well. If I am burning something really important, then I will check it specially.

It shouldn't take 15 minutes to verify a disc. CD Speed can check a disk in 2.5-3 minutes.

One last thing, my MB is uses USB 1.1, is it worth it to buy a USB 2 adapter card?

Absolutely! You are choking your burner's throughput by limiting it to USB 1.1 transfer speeds. That is why it is taking 15 minutes to verify (and burn) your discs. Your drive is capable of burning a disc in about 3 minutes if it isn't limited by USB 1.1. The same goes for verifying a disc.

Cfitz- thats what I meant when I said theres nothing I can do (meaning a coaster is upon me, re-burn).. I am burning a 703 mb file right now, says it writing at 48x, (I am using usb 1.1) . It took exactly 14:51 minutes , if I were to verify data, tack on another 14 mins....
Ok,can you or anyone recommend a good USB2 adapter card?

I don't have any personal experience, but I think they are pretty generic these days and whatever you pick up at your local retailer will be fine. If no one gives you a better recommendation, you might want to look at some of the cards sold at meritline:

One thing you might want to consider if you ever plan on doing video capture from a camcorder is a combined USB 2.0/Firewire card. Adaptec's DuoConnect card has been recommend for this purpose, although it will cost you a good bit more than a generic USB 2.0-only card.

WOW... .......I just bought an Adaptec USB 2.0 card and now I see what you were saying ...USB 2 RULZ!

just burned a 784mb file in less than 5 mins

Just FYI, the DATA settings in Nero are pretty much the same as the AUDIO settings I used in the old webpage.

I'll try and update the web page to reflect my Lite On 52x burner and I'll add insrtuctions for DATA overburning too.

Give me a couple weeks though. I seem to be always working lately.
