Which dvd-rom to buy ?

Postby computer DORK on Mon Feb 03, 2003 1:34 am

Hi Guys,
I am in a quandry. Both the ToshibaSD-M1712 and the
Sony DDU-1621/C1 have been recommended as good dvd-roms
with the same capabilities.
Since all my equipment ( i.e.:dvd player , receiver , tv and soon to be
my new burner DRU 500AX ) are Sony I'm leaning towards
the Sony dvd-rom.
Anyone have any input on which would be the better dvd-rom
to get and why ?
Thanks
CD
Please be kind!

Where the hell did you hear that?!
Examples of why it sucks:

Does the DDU 1621 suck?
Problems With SONY DDU 1621
heeelp!! disappearing DVD drive
Sony DDU-1621
I think I hosed by Sony DDU 1621
And way too many more to list at rpc1.org

Get a Lite-ON DVD-ROM, they're fast and reliable and can read most anything.

DDU-1621 is an OEM BTC DVD-ROM drive . It is not manufactured by Sony . The DRU 500AX is manufactured by Sony and i think it is a good choice though i don't research brands and i have limited knowledge about DVD burners .

In fact both the Toshiba SD-M1712 and the Lite-On LTD-166S have been recommended as dvd-roms with good copying abilities and good format support ( they can read even DVD-RAM )

Sony DDU-1621 is not really bad due now of 20% cheaper price !
It's one of the noiseless DVDs in the market ,supports most known DVD formats you can easy find this moment ,very fast DVD ripping ,and CD audio ripping plus very well DVD-ROM perfomance ! -Also Digital audio out, combines excellent if you have good soundcard-maybe better of all market DVD-roms (depends also on your computer config)

It's OEM of BTC BDV316B : read some info about it:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Article ... undup+Vol2

The only problem is high seek times in acessing Data CDrs writing >24x (and very common today) -Sometimes not possible at all ! -
Choice is yours if you dont mind this !

Toshiba SD-M1712 is new and a little expensive as every new model in the market . An opinion of this you can find :

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Article ... +DVD%2DROM

but you must wait to read users opinion before buy it !

Finally for Liteon choice ,try searching forums .
Older model LTD-163S (without discontinued DVD-RAM support)
looks maybe better in perfomance than LTD-166S as users opinion wrote ,and it's cheaper now !

Gary, do you work for cdrinfo? All you ever do is drop links to their website?

I don't support anybody (Cdrinfo etc) or any of my componets maybe have personal opinion ! -Just write everything I watch, when working with them....This is not always happened here with some brands...,but everybody's notice I think is welcome too .

@dhc014 : This site doesn't load faster as others (..... probably lot of traffic)

@IAN : your reviews are read very carefully by many techical people here(in Greece) but unfortunatelly dublicate your opinion as "personal experiences" in our computer magazines. Also brands like SONY ,ASUS ,TEAC,Plextor are always "excellent" in tests due of monopoly of the market by 3 large import companies.
So brands like Liteon ,Pioneer are "not famous" or hard to find (especially Liteon)

Finally is not easy to compare different reviews ,opinion if want buy something .But some sites do interesting attempt....
