Sony DRU500AX vs. NEC ND-1300, any opinions yet?

Postby freeloader on Mon Feb 03, 2003 7:32 pm

From Ian's article here:
http://www.cdrlabs.com/#1

the review of the DRU500A (to represent the AX edition) here:
http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=154

and the description of the NEC dual format here:
http://www.necd.de/productdetail.php?id=671

Is anyone willing to venture an opinion on how well each will stand up to the other?

It should certainly be interesting. The only real differences between the two stat wise are the seek times and buffer size. The NEC has faster seek times 120 vs 150ms for cd and 140 vs 200ms for DVD, but the Sony has an 8mb buffer as opposed to a 2mb buffer for the NEC.

So the question is which will yield overall better performance? A larger buffer or faster seek. The only other major potential difference I could think of would be to see how picky about media the NEC is over the Sony(Sony does seem to slowly be getting better, however, in terms of media usability however..I'm anxious to hear some brave soul pu tthis new firmware through the ringer to see if its expanded the list of what works).

So, we'll see which turns out to be superior overall, although I'm guessing the more mature Sony drive will probably just edge out the NEC with Sony's larger buffer. The biggest advantage the NEC drive will bring to the table though is providing Sony with its first real competition in the Dual format burning arena. This just means better innovation and better pricing in the long run for us consumers :) Competition is good.

All that said, if you are in the market for a dual DVD burner, I'd wait now until the NEC and the new X versions of the Sony drives to both get a full test just to see which will be better and priced better before you buy.

Don't forget CD Writing speeds. The Sony writes at 24x and the NEC at 16x.

True there too...good point. Although many people probably have their own dedicated high speed cd burner for that stuff...but that is a valid point there. The 24x speed of the Sony was a good selling point for me as I had still been operating off an 8x burner up until I got my DRU500a.

So I gained a decent amount of speed allowing me to just run with a dedicated 16x DVD-Rom drive and the DRU500a for all my burning needs(old sparky my 8x drive replaced my ancient external 2x cd burner in my second machine LOL...an ancient second gen HP that ran through the parallel port....almost want to cry seeing it go heh...I'd just set it to burn then leave for about 45 minutes..good thing it was my "secondary" machine)

What may make the NEC attractive to people though is, unless I've missed it somewhere, I've yet to see an official US price point for it. If NEC offers it cheaper than the DRU's then it might prove to be an attractive buy as spec wise they are still fairly similar drives.

NEC really doesn't have a retail presence (sp?) here in the US. You'll probably see a lot of other manufacturers basing their drives off of this design.

I am waiting for X versions Sony drives to show up in the retail stores. I like the 8 meg buffer and 24x CD-R write speed. The only problem is I have not decided on internal or external model, yet.

I am also hoping that Sony will do some rebate, price-drop, etc when NEC and others flood market with their dvd burners.

Sony probably will drop the price when the time comes. For now they are the only dual format in the US market..but the higher influx of X model drives should also make finding better deals from online retailers easier. Part of the problem currently has simply been the supply hasn't been big enough and/or with the X model on the horizon there havn't been too many deals beyond the MSRP.

I'm still curious to see if the X models are just the G firmware with an updated software package or if the hardware has been improved in any way. Its looking more like the former than the latter though, but still it will save some downloading heh.

just did a 1 shopping bot price search for the Sony dru500ax came up with 5 online dealers with prices fron $330 to $350. One at $340 says it's in stock.

If it comes available here in town I'll pay the msrp of $350 if not I'll buy mail order when (if) it hits $300. Nothing in that statement is carved in stone. ($320 + shipping = $350 local price)

If you used pricegrabber, the place has a crap rating on resellerratings, 3.45... places like newegg and mwave score in the mid 9's.

It'll be interesting to see the differences with the AX. I'll probably pull the trigger when it comes out.

DealTime is always my first search. I seem to get the most consistantly good info from them. I was not advocating for anyone to buy yet. I even said that I was still waiting. What I was trying to show is that someone was saying that they had them in stock already. Prices should be coming down fairly soon as the number of dealers with stock increases.

Sony DRU-500A is better in overall performance, I think. I have had both DRU-500A and ND-1100A. But ND-1100A costs $180 in Tokyo while DRU-500A costs $380 in Seoul.

Since I already have ND-1100A, I'll not wait for ND-1300A. 4x writers from Samsung and LG sound better to me.

The world's cheapest dual (+ and -) DVD writer is the one I tried to buy three months ago. Buffalo DVM-4222FB (internal) and DVM-4222IU2 (IEEE 1394 + USB 2.0 external) based on Sony DRU-500A.
