Very cool Ian, I've been looking for more info on this drive. It's interesting to hear that it uses an mtk chipset, but it's not really surprising.

yeah, I had to take it apart to see who made it. I found that it used a MediaTek chipset. The PCB's also had big MSI logos on them, so I guess MSI actually manufactured this drive themselves. Now that I think about it, that should have been obvious. MS-8216M (M for MSI) versus the MS-8216B (B for BenQ).

Hi Ian,

I am looking for a DVD-ROM that reads badly scratched discs well.

From the review, the MSI appears to be such a drive. I am more interested in the drive being able to read scratched video cds and data cds successfully than I am about audio cds.

However, for the DAE tests, you mentioned :

One thing I did notice here was that the MS-8216M was very sensitive to fingerprints and dirt on a disc. The drive had a tendency to produce errors in CD DAE unless the disc was almost spotlessly clean.

So this drive is sensitive to fingerprints / scratches for audio extraction, but not sensitive to reading data ?

The drive didn't seem to have any problems with data CD's or DVD's with scratches mild scratches. Just audio CD's.

The disc I use for the "scratched and dirty" tests is an audio CD btw.
