Can not make backup of DVD movies on Sony DRX-500UL

Postby LeoNosser on Sat Feb 01, 2003 10:24 pm

I just got my Sony DRX-500UL. I was unable to make an archive copy of a DVD movie. I got an error message that said the movie "might" have copy protection. Can someone explain about copy protection, how it works, and how I might make archive copies of movies that I've bought and paid for? Thanks in advance for any help.

The software that came with the Sony DRX-500UL is RecordNow.

There is a lot of helpful information over at vcdhelp.com. I would suggest starting here:

get dvd decrypter. it ROCKS

can image dvd-5 videos and then write it (saves soooo much time) or decrypt the whole thing in ifo mode and then u can use ifoedit or dvd2one to get it small enuff to fit on one disc. from there i use imgtool to make an img and then burn the image with dvd decrypter. u can skip this step if u know exactly what settings to use in nero, but with that setup every disc ive made plays in my standalone (ghetto old samsung-511)

Yeah DVD decrypter+IFOedit+some form of burning software works great once you learn what you need to do...and their are plenty of guides available.

Alternative number 2 would be to purchase DVDXcopy which is really starting to mature nicely. I personally picked up a copy of DVDXCopy because I just started getting lazy :D Still though, a few dvds, especially older ones, will not work correctly with DVDXcopy so it pays to know how to do it the manual way no matter what. Not only will it help you to fully understand how a DVD movie works, but it does come in handy from time to time.
