Futureshop is seelling the dvr-a05 for 399$ CAN after 150$ mail in rebate.

What are the disadvantages of this drive exept the unavailability to write + media? (Im really thinking about buying it!)

Disadv -
I have heard that it doesn't like cheap media.
I have only burned two brands of DVD-R so far with my mine.
Both worked great at their rated speed.
Princo 2X (fake TDK?) and KHyperMedia (CMC).
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW
TEAC CD-W540E 40X CD-RW

don't even think about it. steer clear from it. don't do like i did or forever live in regret and agony. (not kidding)

that drive doesn't write well its own brand of media at their rated speed, so imagine what it does with other media not certified by pioneer.
to everything there's an end...
except for the sausage wich has two

I agree with sabujo, if you need a new burner I would buy the Sony DRU-500A.
I have them both (Sony DRU-500A and Pioneer A05) and the Sony is by far the most useful. I have not gotten mine to burn at 4X yet but it will burn + media at 2.4X and it will burn -R at 2 X (assuming the media is rated for that) so it is very useful. Not only that but I have not found any media that it rejects or cannot use. The A05 on the other hand will burn Ritek 4X media at 4X but that is the ONLY media I have gotten to work with it! I have made tons of coasters trying to use media that the Sony readily accepts.
I assume they will eventually fix these problem but unitl they do there are a lot more happy Sony users then there are Pioneer users. :)

Good luck with whichever one you get..........
Have fun.........Bob
