It doesn't look like Optorite is done updating the page for the CW5201. The specs they have listed are the same ones for the CW4802 . I'm just hoping these drives are better than some of their others.

Whats with the 24x-RW one having an 8MG buffer and the 32x-RW one a 2MG? If the media compatiblity/burn quality was good, I'd get a 52x32x52x with an 8MG buffer if they made one.

Agreed. The 32x rewriting would qualify as an advance, but not if it just burns bad discs 33% faster than before.

i am more of a LITE ON fan but i liked model CW4802 48x16x48 and it did well on all of my blanks. AUDIO extraction was the only thing that samed a little slow compared to LITE ON.

I guess these are what the new MSI drives are based on. Maby the MSI 48x16x48x drive can be flashed to one of these babys Does anyone know if the 48x24x48 drive is based on the same chip as the 48x16x28?

The 48/16/48 used an Oak Tech chipset. Since the 48/24/48 uses BURN-Proof, I'm guessing it uses a Sanyo. Overclocking probably won't work.

If it uses Sanyo then I buy it, I'm craving for a Sanyo chipset drive, and I hate Oak!

It probably won't be Sanyo. My guess, given that MSI/Accesstek/Optorite are related business-wise to Cyberdrive/CIS (Arrgo) is that the drives will be Mediatek, and BURN-Proof is probably a name they've used in the absence of any proper trade name for Mediatek's buffer-underrun protection.

The 48x and 52x (24x rewrite) will more than likely be the same drive with differing firmware, and the MSI drives will be the same. The 32x rewrite I'm not sure about.

The 48x (16x rewrite) I think is a badge or modification of the MSI 40x drives in the same way as Artec -- a wholly new design of 48x drive using ZCLV just isn't sensible.

Do Sanyo even make chipsets any more? I was under the impression that even Plextor were Mediatek now.....

Actually, their 40x writer, the CW4001, used Sanyo's BURN-Proof.

It'll be interesting if this drive is a Sanyo. It'll mean that a tiny Taiwanese company will be the only manufacturer with a 52x Sanyo-based writer. Peculiar, especially as the Sanyo chipset should make the drive quite expensive!

On a more serious topic, it looks like Optorite removed the CW5201 and CW5205 from their website. You can still access the pages via the links I posted, but they aren't on the product page anymore.

On the other hand, they have released firmware for the CW5202, CW5205 and CW4801.

Let's hope so. It is possible that Optorite have designed the Sanyo drive simply to cover themselves in case they're short of Oak (or whatever they're using now) chips, since as I have said the Sanyo chipsets are more expensive than many of the others, and that we won't see many Sanyo Optorite drives out there. But I may be totally wrong.

Has to be said though the quality of a burner has more to do with the quality of the transport and firmware support than the chipset employed. But, this drive could still be very interesting. And with Optorite and LiteOn getting in on the act with DVD recorders, this can only be a good thing, Taiwanese competition will bring prices down and the quality so far of the Japanese drives has been lacking in some areas.

I've noticed on Optorite's website that they are advertising a combo drive, the DC4801 (48x24x48x and 16x DVD read).

I picked up the iomega Optorite 48x16x48x CDRW from OfficeMax today for $40, w/ a $20 MIR.

So far the drive works great, except for the noted bug of not being able to surface scan correctly w/ CD Speed.

There shouldn't be any doubt that the CW5205 uses BURN-Proof now. It's on Sanyo's authorization list:
