DVD-ROM ( Which to buy ) re compatibility?

Postby computer DORK on Mon Jan 27, 2003 1:40 pm

Hi guys,
Let me say that I call myself a computer DORK because I
have not even reached the level of a NEWBIE ,so please keep
your answers simple !!!
I recently upgraded my computer. It is as follows :
Motherboard :Aopen AK77-333 w/usb 2.0
CPU : Athlon xp2000+
Hard Drive :Maxtor 60 gig 7200rpm (plus 10gig from old computer )
Memory :Apacer 512MB DDR266
Video card : GEForce 2 MX400 64m
I am running Windows xp professional
I also ordered X-copy and Nero 5.5
I canceled my order for Sony DRU500A thanks to the comments
on this site. I plan to get the Sony DRU500AX.
Now here is my question : I want to buy a dvd-rom that will work with
all the media i.e dvd-+r dvd - + rw so that I can copy dvd's.
Please recommend a dvd-Rom that will work ( be compatible ) with
the " STUFF" that I have.
Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You computer DORK
P.S. wish I knew how to access those cute emotion logo's.
Please be kind!

Well, the latest Toshiba SD-M1712 reads everything: CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and even DVD-RAM.

The JLMS (aka LiteOn) XJ-HD166S also supports all DVD formats and rips at 12x

Thanks to Han and VIO_man for your help.
I wpold just like to clarify with Han that the SD-M1712 is NOT
the same machine as the SD-M1712I which cannot read all dvd
formats. If it is the same,I read somewhere that it won't read everything?
Can you help me on this question?
Thanks again

I'm not aware of the "I" revision of SD-M1712. Most likely the store which sells the drive mislabeled it...

This Toshiba reads all the mentioned discs for sure.

There's a review at CDR-Info. It has lots of typos (introduction is completely wrong - it's not a combo drive...), the buggy Nero InfoTool doesn't show DVD+R(W), buffer size may be wrong (128 instead of 192 KB), but all the measurements are quite correct.
