So what do you guys and girls think about this drive? Do you think Plextor designed it?

WOW! Pretty impressive! It both writes and rewrites CD-ROM and DVD-ROM :o :

Now I finally have a use for all those AOL discs I have been saving... :D

(Yes, yes, I know what they mean. But it still struck me as a funny when I read it.)

Cool! But I'd like it a heck of alot better if it could do -RW too. I'll probably still get a DRU-500AX. But it seems there are some reliability issues with the 500A. I'm wondering if the AX is just a "fix". I'll be waiting to see what everyone's experinces with the AX I guess. If there are any "issues", I'll go with the Plex. 16x CD-R burn, though? Kinda pokey...

Isn't that a Desert Eagle?

As for the 500A, given that Sony have sold, what, 100-200,000 units, I'm not suprised that a few of those will be defective.

Pradeep, yep! It's a .50AE...one of my favorite toys.

Of course they're gonna have some problems. But I've not had good luck with sony hardware (in the form of the PSX/PS2). I'll still probably get one, though.

why only 2MB buffer? :o :x :x

maybe this is an indication that this drive is not designed by Plextor...

Considering the amount of problems the 500 is giving, I wouldn't be so sure about it until I read some Plextor reviews. I have several friends with the Sony and they ALL (no exception) report several problems and coasters with several brands of media. It appears to be extremely picky when it comes to media.

I'd rather have only + than their coaster piles. We'll see.

The Plextor PX-504A will be cheaper than the Sony DRU-500AX!

I've always coveted Plextor hardware, I still use my Plextor 24X for CDs despite having both a Pioneer DVR-104 and Sony DRX500UL. Why is Plextor so late to the game? I would have expected a multi-write drive from them rather than a +RW only.

For a company that makes only optical drives you'd think they'd offer something truly innovative.

I use Princo 2x DVD-R and i have no problems.

I prefer DVD-R because the price is more cheaper here in Europe(half of the price)

It has been a wait-and-see game.

Plus-only drives cost least and perform best. That is why.

Yeah, but +R media is still more expensive... at least until some of the Taiwan manufacturers ramp up production. :D

no Ricoh parts here...

Postby HardwareHarry on Thu Jan 30, 2003 1:23 pm

After comparing reviews of Ricoh's new design DVD+R/RW (and Philips, Aopen etc...)
I come to the conclusion the Plextor is no Ricoh design, because the DVD reading has 8x speed, while the Plextor has 12x speed.

I guess it has no Oak OTI chipset either because they have the 8Mb buffer in use...
(Usually it's a Sanyo design) :D (edited Harry)

Well It's easy now to come back on my gamble after reading the news that in dec.2002 Sanyo has a new chip out LC897390K wich I do my bet...
because they will widely distributed in January 2003, so initially It's a SANYO model after all again !
