DVD-R Media: Tayio Yuden (and the cheap stuff . . .)

Hello all. The $150 deal for a DVR-105 at staples was too good to resist, so I finally decided to buy a DVD-R. Now media . . . I have been looking over several boards to try to get a feal on the media sistuation with DVD-R's. Wow is it ugly . . .

Anyways, two quick questions:

1. I figured for stuff I actuially want to archive, I was willing to spend about $2.10 a disk, since that is equivalent to $0.30 a disk for CD-R's. Well, it's pretty obvious that won't cut it. Most of the really good media people reccoment starts around $3-4 a disk. I noticed that Tayio Yuden DVD-R's go for ~$2.50 each, and considering their CD-R reputation, thought that it was funny that NOONE is reccomending them considering the price of the reccomended high quality dvd media. Is there a reason why?

2. The cheap stuff. Cheap media is good, especially with the expensive stuff so damn expensive. I define cheap as around $0.50 to $0.80 a disk. There is a ton of cheap stuff out there (DVD-Pro, Low End Verbatums, Princo), and there are a ton of people reccomending each, and a ton of people swearing each is crap. Who is telling the truth?

Oh yeah, and I lied. There is a third question. On the pioneer site, the latest update for the DVR-105 firmware is 1.0. I know i've seen more recent firmware leaked on some message board, but for the life of me I cannot find the post. Can someone please point me in the correct direction?

I personally have never seen Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's on store shelves. Where did you happen to see them? I'm probably guessing online, if so send us the link.

Princo 1X media (the cheapest DVD-R discs I can get around here, about $1.25 US per disc) works well for me for data storage. The discs recorded with my Toshiba drive can be read back well in both the writer an my LG 16x CD-ROM. I even left one of these discs "out" (e.g., recording side exposed to ambient indoor light, but not direct sunlight) for about a week and it's just as readable as all the other discs which have been each sitting in a jewel case on a shelf).
I haven't tried these discs with DVD Video yet; I simply don't use my burner for that purpose at this time.

link. They got them in 20's for $2.50 each too. I have seen them in other places, but this is the cheapest I've found. They don't seem to be that rare.

If you want TYs you can always buy Fujis they're made by them. I know they cost $7.99 CAD each not sure what they are in the States.

Gee, that's only slightly more then twice the price of the link I posted. What a deal . Anyways, I sorta need some disks now, so waiting for 4x is not an option :\ Plus the way I burn, the differennce between 4x and 1x is negligable since I burn between classes. Also, if I can get a better burn at 1x with 4x media, I would def. go that route.

BeAll DVD-R may be the best among the cheap brand names. But it's over $1.

I would be surprised if your discs started failing due to exposure to ambient indoor lighting. Direct sunlight is another matter.
