error in copying my wedding DVD content to my hard drive

Hi Everyone,

I'm brand spanking new to the world of DVD's. I have a wedding video of my wedding, which was produced by a videographer last month.

I'm backing up the DVD to my hard drive in case the DVD itself ever develops any problems.

I'm using Windows 2000 Professional, service pack 2, IBM T20 laptop w/ DVD reader. I was copying the files on the wedding DVD to my hard drive, and on the last file, which was a *.VOB file, I got an error:

"Cannot copy VTS_01_3: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

Does anyone know what this means?

"Normal" DVD's are encrypted and can't just be copied over to the hard drive...maybe your's is too (don't know why it would be, but??).

Click on "Latest Downloads", and download CladDVDXP and use that to rip the DVD. If you have any problems with that program, they have a "How-to" section on that page also.

I agree with you, that my wedding DVD should not be encrypted. I was able to copy 90% of the DVD, and just on the last file do I get this error.

I was able to use my DVD player to play the 90% of the copied files on my hard drive.

If anyone else has any idea, please let me know too!!

Ok, if you can play the files you've already copied it's not encrypted (just make sure you take the disc out of the drive, mine always plays the DVD even when I tell it to play the .VOB file), the drive may be having trouble reading the disc.

See if CladDVDXP can rip it, if not try it on another DVD drive.

I assume you can watch everything in the DVD player.

Another program you can try is Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2.
They have a trial that you can download.

DMF2 looks for the Video_TS folder and reads all the VOBs (it does not work with DVD with AC3 audio like the commercial movies).

After you read it, you can create new DVD folders and if you want a new DVD image for burning.

However, you should not expect suppot from Ulead.

Well, I took my DVD to my friend's house, and his brand new HP DVD writer could read the entire contents, as well as copy it to his hard drive.

We fumbled a bit with the myDVD program on his HP, before we realized that another program, called "Record it" or something would do the job. We were able to create a new DVD+RW disk with the files we copied. However, we could only play that disk on his PC, not on his DVD player - which was something I sorta expected, considering that DVD+RW is not as compatible as DVD-R.

What really matters is that we were able to back up the data of the wedding, so when I get a DVD writer myself (along with a new PC) I can make DVD's.
