Well make sure you have the updated firmware also, 1.21 I thinks its called. Do a search on google I am sure you can find it.

I hope you have more luck with your A05 then I have had. The only media I found that will work at all (at any speed!) was the Ritek 4X media. It burned at 4X. All other media, with the exception of those Princo blue R/W discs, failed. I get a message that either says "insert media" or it burns a coaster. I am satisfied that it burns Ritek at 4X though that is why I bought it in the first place. But my firmware is 1.00 so maybe if I upgraded the firmware it would work with more media.

Good luck with it.........

I would not return it. I just be sure to use Ritek 4X media with it. Burns like a champ! I think Princo media also works on it. I have some old Princo -R/W media and it works on the A05 so maybe other Princo media works too.
Ritek 4X media can be had from Hyper Micro for less then $2.00 a disc. That is hard to beat and every one of them work. I have never had a failure. I am sure Pioneer will clear this up soon anyway.

I'VE GOT THE SAME PROBLEM

Postby sabujo on Sun Feb 02, 2003 8:02 am

pionner's own 2x dvd-rw only can be red in the recorder if burned at 2x. if it's burned at 1x or i use any other 1x brand it will read fine on other dvd-rom drives. 2x media from princo makes nice coasters though a tad expensive. i really want to give pionner a piece of my mind. i've spent a s**t load of money and time over this piece of crap. why oh why didn't i just waited another week and got me a sony wich i know for a fact has none of this issues? i'll defenitly return it asap.
to everything there's an end...
except for the sausage wich has two

sabujo, don't think the Sony drive is a bed of roses either. I have both of them and while I would recommend the Sony over the Pioneer A05 I cannot get this one to burn at 4X on any kind of media with any version of firmware. However it will burn at 2.4 X or better on +R media and it works fine with -R on 1X or 2X. So it is the most useable of the two but not without problems. We have another Sony drive here that was purchased at the same time as mine and has 1.0f firmeware that will burn the DVD-ON version of Ritek 4X media at 4X. We are currently trying to disover the differences in the drives, setups, etc.
It does sound like you may have a bad drive. Although I do not use burners for reading so I am not sure how mine compare.

Good luck with it...............
