I have both the A05 and the Sony DRU-500A with the 1.0f upgrade. The A05 works fine as long as you use Ritek 4X media for burning. But it is very un-compatible with other brands of media. But with Ritek 4X media it works flawlessly at 4X.
The Sony on the other hand uses most any media either + or -. The big difference a user sees between the + and - media is that the + always burns at 2.4X. While most of the - media burns at 1X. Of course the - media has begin to ship 4X and 2X media has been available for awhile. First the 4X does not work in my Sony, others have said it worked in theirs however. I am sure there are other technical differences between them but what a user sees upfront is the speed differences. I think if I had it to do over I would buy 2 Sonys. True the Sony does not appear at present to burn at 4X but I am sure that will be resolved. Fact is the Sony uses either + or - and the A05 does only -, assuming you can find media it will accept. And they are roughly the same price so I think you get more for your money with the Sony if you can find one.

Good luck with it...............

Hi

I picked up a DVR-105 today, you have mentioned Ritek disks, can you tell me who sells them, are they memorex, tdk, ??.

I purchased some Memorex DVD-RW disks and as yet have not successfully managed to write a disk without error, which I guess is down to the media??

Help is appreciated.

If you bought an A05 then most likely the only media that will work on it is Ritek 4X media.
You can get them online from Meritline.com. The brand name is Ritek and they are 4x speed discs. They have worked flawlessly in my A05. They are the only media that has worked with it though. I have not been able to get any of the popular brand named media to work. But as long as Ritek works it will be okay. I am sure that Pioneer will get the compatability issues cleared up in the near future. Meanwhile Ritek media is the way to go.

Good luck with it.............

Hi boblx2, I have a few questions if you have a few minutes. I recently bought a Cendyne 4X (Rebadged Pioneer A05). I am looking for a good reliable media and I don't mind spending a little more as long as they are good quality.

The Ritek 4X media that you are using, can you point me to which exact ones in the meritline.com site? I saw some Ritek branded but only the 2X. Are these the G04 that you are using? I also noticed some Meritline Branded 4X which I'm not sure if these are the ones: http://www.meritline.com/merexrit4xdv.html.
(What's the percentage of duds in these).

If you happen to have the exact item description or part number or link to to actual item, that would be greatly appreciated.

Some additional questions:

1) Using these Ritek 4X, do you always burn at 4X? How well do they work at 2X?
2) Have you backed up any DVD movies using these Ritek 4X? Have you tried backing up fairly large movies ~4.7 GB such as Lord of The Ring or Minority Report and at what speed? These two movies seem to have some issues with lower quality DVD-R's as the outer edges of cheaper blanks are not consistent thus causing pixelation, choppyness, or pauses near the end of the movie.
3) How many of these DVD-R's have you used so far?
4) Aside from the Ritek 4X blanks, have you tried any other brands that yielded good results as well?

Thank you in advance.

Hi

I have purchased my media from a place here in the UK, this link may be useful as they say what media may work with your writer.

I purchased the Ritek 2x DVD-RW and Nero is reporting only a 1x rewrite speed on them where other have said you can rewrite at 2x!

I also purchased a cake of Infiniti 4x and true to their word they happily write at 4x but I think my PC's HDD needsa good defrag as during the burn the buffer loss was causing me a panic!

Check this out though

Cheers
