Video DVD-R: ISO vs. ISO/UDF + future DVD player compatibili

I used to think Nero had a problem with DVD video and Stomp RecordNow Max was fine for burning them:
However, I now think it might just my players.


DVD PLAYBACK EQUIPMENT:
As far as DVD players are concerned, I own a Toshiba SD-4109X, Apex AD-703 and Xbox and some DVD-ROM drives.


RESULTS:
Nero burned discs (UDF/ISO - which is the standard according to some sites): play on ONLY the Apex.

Stomp burned discs (UDF): play on all THREE players.


CONFUSION:
If UDF/ISO is the standard, then why do don't my Toshiba and Xbox play those?

If UDF is NOT the standard, then why do ALL three players play them?


CONCERN:
That all the home movies that I have burned to DVD-R (as DVD Video) will not be playable by future generations of DVD players, due to the format they were burned in.


WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR:
Any feedback, format (ISO vs. ISO/UDF) suggestions and player recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Update: the newest Nero 5.5.10 (using DVD video compilation)
does play in the Toshiba. Previous versions didn't work!
Looks like they fixed the bugs, which clouded the issue even more.
(Not in Apex, but that might be unique to Apex,
or it could be the burn speed, I will burn at 1X next time).

It worked fine with my 1st gen Xbox just now

What is funny is that Nero used to burn
DVDs that play only my Apex, not on my Toshiba or Xbox.

The newest Nero does exactly the opposite. They do NOT play on the Apex, but now DO play on the Toshiba and Xbox

Thank for the info VEFF. I need Nero to burn something that will work on both my Apex and my X-Box. Looks like I will have to continue to use Stomp. I would use the Record Now provided with my 500A but I have no way of telling it to ignore DVD specs when burning a VIDEO_TS folder. At least with Stomp I can tell it to ignore.

I personally think it is a mistake to use an Apex player for a test of whether a disc is playable or not. I have an Apex Ad-5131 and I don't recall any disc that would not play on it unless it was totally trashed. I also have a Panasonic DV-30 wihich is a couple of years older and pretty finicky about what it plays. For instance it will not even play a VCD unless it is burned on Memorex R/W CD's. If the Panasonic will play the disc I have found that it will play on most players. The Apex would play any of those fake TDK's that were floating around for awhile. The Panasonic would not play any of them. That being the case I caught on to the scam. Had I only used the Apex I would have never known there was a problem with that media.

That is exactly why I wanted to try the Toshiba (and even a brand new player).
I could play my old Nero discs in the Apex, because the Apex uses
(I think) a file based system (think the owner of a big DVD+RW site once stated that might be the case), like a DVD-ROM drive would.
However, my Toshiba wouldn't play Nero discs, only Stomp discs.
Therefore I figured that several drives were needed to test a burning software's efficacy.

However, with the new Nero, the Apex doesn't play them and the Toshiba dioes.

VEFF, what I get from your first post on this thread is that Stomp burned discs will play on any of your players but Nero will not.
I currently am having a problem with my Apex where certain discs will not Fast Forward or Fast Reverse. They will FF at 2X but nothing faster. Also If I try to go faster such as 4X, etc. The DVD will stop and I have to start it from the beginning. This is exasperating if I am half way through the movie to have to start all over again at 2X. That means if it is a two hour movei and I am half way through it I have to wait 15 minutes for it to get back to where I need to be to finish the movie. My Apex AD-5131 only goes to 8X anyway, unlike my Panasonic which really rips! But this problem does not show up on my Panasonic. It appears to be on movies that were made using CCE, or maybe it is a Nero problem. If it is a direct DVD Decrypter .iso read and write then the problem does not occur.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

2) Someone else there tested Stomp discs (burned to DVD-R, +R, -RW etc.). Of the 10 players or so, every one player the Stomp DVD-Rs.

I will keep burning comfortably with Stomp.

I may be getting a progressive scan player soon, $129 for 7 disc JVC changer (no rebates). I would love to see how they play on that.
