It will cost the same price as the previous DRU-500A drive. The new firmware allows for 4x writing and greater media compatibility. If you still don't know what firmware is, check out the FAQ section.

The only reason it seems to be higher priced right now is because they're not available much of anywhere. As soon as Sony gets them shipped out and everyone has them in stock again the prices will undoubtedly begin to drop back to near $300 like they were before. My assumption is that they're being heldup by the firmware upgrade which cams out late in December, if I remember right.

Supposedly NEC is coming out with an ND-1100A and TDK is coming out with an AID+040212. Both will supposedly go head to head with the Sony dual format DVD burner. Has anyone heard anything about these 2 new contenders?

Thanks. I must be blind. I scanned through the list of threads and missed that one, as obvious as it was.

After my previous post I remembered that Verbatim is also supposed to be coming out with one soon. I haven't seen a model name or number for it yet.

I'm watching them real close. I would have the Sony right now if they were readily available. I need one for archiving a few thousand large 100MB+ image files. CD-Rs just will not do the job at 5 to 6 per disk. DVD will let me get 40 or more per disk.

I noticed in one of the other threads that a few people were having problems with Sony's drive motors breaking down. Is this a very common problem with the Sony?

NEC ND-1100A has been available on the US and Japanese market for several weeks. But if you are talking about "Dual" format drives, I'm not interested anymore unless Sony drops the DRU-500A(X) retail price to under $200 before Jan 20.

O.K., NEC has changed the model number to ND-1300 and it is dual format. See:

I've just done a quick search and haven't found it available anywhere (in the U.S.) yet. Anyone know who is carrying it already?

Out of curiosity, what do you base your $200 maximum price on? I have not been able to find any type of dual format DVD burner available right now other than the Sony at about $340, if it is even in stock.

No, because you can download the firmware (1.0f) for free from Sony.

I got mine for $40 out of pocket, thanks to a discount coupon, rebate & gift card. Was more than willing to spend that. The problem for me was finding a best buy that had one in stock. :D

O.K., From your answer I take it your price limit is based on what you'll pay not on what a dual format DVD burner can be purchased for.

The only reason I'm coincidering a DVD burner is because the dual format is now available. If I still had to decide between formats I'd continue to put off the change over to DVD.

8x requires a more powerful laser, the ones in the 4x burners won't be able to do it. I'm just waiting for 4x media to come down more.

Impossible. Like what Pradeep said, the current lasers on DVD burners can't handle speeds that fast. If you buy a DVD burner now, the fastest you will be able to find is 4x. Also the current drives' hardware won't be upgradable to 8x, you would need a new drive based on a new chipset, lasers, and etc.
