Two questions:

1. Have you (or any other members) had any experience with the Badcopy Pro software. It is detecting my most important files and the file sizes themselves look about right. I am hesitant over whether to buy it...
2. How on Earth did you join these forums in 1970?

Okay, here is an update:

I downloaded and ran CD Data Rescue V 1.2 and I must say that it was able to see and (theoretically) recover my most important data files. The evaluation version only permits you to recover the lesser of 10 files or 50 kB of data - rather limiting, to say the least - but I did successfully recover a Word XP document and it was perfect (even the formatting was perfect!). So I am very close to coughing up the $39.50 USD to buy this program - seems a fair price to me. Any further comments from you folks, before I take the plunge?

While I was awaiting some advice from you guys, I came across Isobuster. It couldn't read everything, but it did successfully restore my most important files. I am very happy because, of course, it worked but also because it is freeware! .

Thanks again for all your words of encouragement and support. It looks like I won't have to start drinking to dull the pain.

Came across it? While wating for advice from us? ISO Buster? As in the second program in the list I gave you in the first reply to your initial question?

I actually found a reference to isobuster (0.99.6) elsewhere - but I certainly regret not following your excellent and well-intended advice; it would have saved me much anguish and time. Apparently you missed the fact that caffeinated's discs are "un-closed" DirectCD CD-Rs, not CD-RWs.

maybe i'm missing something, but i didn't see anything in caffeinated's posts about the discs being CDR not CDRW.
(not that it really matters...as far as his problem goes)

Before I upgraded to my new hard drive, I used direct CD to copy all my important files - about 1.5 GB of text and data files - onto Direct CD formated memorex 700 MB CDs. This was under Win XP Pro (SP1) using the ECDC software that came with my LG GCE8320B. Depending on whether they were close to full, I left them either "as is", so that I could more data to them later, or "formated so that any CD reader could read them"; none were closed.

So Isobuster 0.99.6 will actually recover your data for you?

I know that 1.0 and 1.1 or 1.2 won't unless you pay for it.

Can you provide the link to the working copy you have?

I could google it, but I would like the same one as you.
