Is there anything bad about this model compared to the 52x 24x 52x model ? Like is better media compat. with one or the other ? Or anything else like that?

I bought that very model for my father's computer last week (Monday after Thanksgiving).

I got an 'open box' for $49.99 I was able to make sure the drive inside was indeed a Lite On 48x24x48x.

The box said 48x12x48x, but the drive was a 48x24x48x.

There's no markings on the box as to which drive is really inside.

I own the LTR-52246s and the drives are very similar. I don't know if you can flash it up to the 52x drive or not.

The included Nero identifies the drive as a Lite On LTR-48246s, and so does Windows.

I tried it with Verbatim 24x CD-RW's and they burned fine at 24x.

If you're thinking about this drive, go get it!

It may or may not be a Lite-ON. I bought a Buslink 48x12x48 from CompUSA and it turned out to be a AOpen 48x12x50...

So why did dhc014 not get a lite on cd-rw when buying a buslink cd-rw drive? I thought thats all buslink uses ?

This is an absolut, when windows and nero indentify the drive with LTR that means Lite-On. I have purchased 3 repackaged drive so far and they all being identified either with LTR (Lite -0ne based part number) or they have had Lite-On tage on them. So if your drive have been recognized by Nero or Windows as LTR-48X24X48 or 48X16X48 or 48X24X48 then rest assured that your drive is LiteOn.

The reason I got a AOpen is that Buslink sells different drives as their 48x12x48 model.

Open the box and look, then take it up to the cash and tell them it's an open box, but that you'll buy it anyway. That would be morally questionable, but I'm not passing judgement on anyone. "Caveat Emptor-Let The Buyer Beware".

In my case, I found the box on the shelf labeled as "open box item" and was discounted to $49.99

Otherwise, just spend a little extra and buy a Retail version of the Lite On drive.

In my case I went to Best Buy, talked to salesperson and ask him if he open the Buslink Drive and is Lite-On I will buy the same box, he did and infact was repackaged Lite-On and I did buy it. So you might consider this option also.

I made sure to get a box that said "SmartBurn" (a Lite-On trademark name) and I got lucky - I got the Lite-On 48x24x48 (LTR-48246S). Some of the boxes said "JustLink" and "JustSpeed" which is a Ricoh trademark usually has been associated with Aopen drives.

Incidentally the Lite-On drives typically go up to 50x at the end of 700MB discs, so the Aopen "48x12x50" really doesn't have the speed advantage over Lite-On that it would suggest.
