TDK 4x indiDVD Spotted @ Best Buy

Postby Ian on Sat Jan 04, 2003 8:03 pm

The Best Buy in Madison, WI got in TDK's new 4x DVD writer. I haven't seen these before. They had them by the counter in the computer department. Not by the other DVD writers.

No idea what the price was. No price tag on the shelf.

hoxlund, can you check the price on these?

Wasn't this thing supposed to be based on the NEC ND-1050 or something?

Hmmm, the Best Buy in Rego Park (New York City), NY had it sometime between two and three weeks ago with the other DVD recordable drives.

I gathered you're talking about this drive:

Yup, thats it. 2-3 weeks? We're a little behind out here in the sticks.

Has anyone bought one of these?

I bought one of these a few weeks ago at Best Buy in Northern VA for $350. I have not had much time to work with it yet but I have burned a few videos on DVD+R and several tests on +RW. So far so good.

Have you been able to find 4x DVD+R media?

I have not tried to look for 4x media yet. The drive comes with a single 4x DVD+R disc but I have not tried to burn that yet in case I want to return the drive. Right now, burning at 2.4x (vs 4x) does not seem to be that slow when you figure the 2+ hours it takes Pinnacle Studio to re-render the video before a burn. There has to be a faster way...

I was trying to decide between the Sony DRU-500A and the TDK 4x. I could not find the Sony anywhere when the TDK appeared at Best Buy so I decided to give it a shot.

Yeah, I saw the IndiDVD 4X writer at the Best Buy here in NC (I do not wish to disclose the city) the last time I was there.

I sent emails to Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, and a few others about 4x DVD+R media (and also asking about a lot of other things.)

Ritek was going to "update" on 4x DVD+R in December whatever that means.

Though there are already some Verbatim 4x DVD+R available, they cost too much compared to $1.8 Ritek 4x DVD-R.
