Strange DMA problems

Postby damon on Sat Jan 04, 2003 11:13 am

My current configuration is CD-RW as secondary master and DVD-ROM as secondary slave. BIOS recognize the both drives as Ultra DMA 2 devices. I enabled the DMA support for both drives in Windows ME. The strange situation comes when i want to read a CD in DVD-ROM - I put the disc in and seems that the CD is loaded normal and then the computer hangs down. I cant do anything untill restart. The reading in CD-RW is normal. I solved the problem by turning off the DMA supprort from Windows configuration. After this everything is normal but the reading i the DVD is very slow. DMA support is enabled from BIOS configuration. The configuration is 440BX, Celeron 466MHz, 256 RAM. In my WIndows XP instalation this problem is absent although DMA is enabled and working normal - the reading is fast enough. It's seems to be a problem of Windows ME but i can't understand what is the problem...

Try uninstalling both the drives from device manager, and the secondary channel, and then let windows detect them again. Most of the time, that works.

I removed the two drives and the IDE controller, windows detected them and reinstall but the situation is the same... :-?

This is a dual-boot machine that runs either XP or ME on the exact same hardware?

Have you tried installing the DVD-ROM by itself to see if that makes ME any happier? Have you installed the latest ME drivers for your IDE controller, and any and all other ME patches?

Dual boot instalation on the same computer. I've never installed some IDE drivers ot win ME pathches. Before instalation of RW i think DMA support was enabled and working well but then it was secondary master. I'll try to install DVD-ROM alone but i don't think the problem is hardware.
