Which one to buy? Dilemma.

Postby ZeroCool on Sat Jan 04, 2003 7:27 am

First let me explain my situation. I have a laptop and need a cd-rw for it. I have two options: I can by an external burner or an internal burner and then buy a USB 2.0/Firewire external enclousure for it. Here are my choices.

1) Universal Buslink Internal 52x24x52 RW5252, $24.79.

2) Memorex 40x12x40 External 3202-3262, $73.38.

3) Samsung 48x16x48 Internal SW-248BRASF, $29.78.

4) TDK Velo CD 48x16x48 AI-481648, $25.00.

Does anyone know which manufacture makes the external Memorex drive? Also if there are any reviews for these drives. I read reviews of similar models and am leaning towards the TDK/external enclosure combo. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would opt for an external USB2/FW enclosure and any reasonable internal drive, such as a (possibly rebadged) Lite-On. (I've been using LTR-48125W in a FireWire enclosure for six months on various 98SE and XP laptops without problems.) As for enclosures, run the search here for "external enclosure" and read the recent posts.

I would go for the BusLink 52x as it's a LiteOn and is a great burner. You could then use the enclosure for that one. Ian has a review of that drive here as a Cendyne which is also a rebadged LiteOn http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=160
As far as the TDK goes, I think it can be flashed to a 48x24x48 with their latest firmware, that drive is reviewed here http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=142
