DRU-500A with fw 1.0f burns KHypermedia 1X DVD-Rs at 2X

Postby VEFF on Mon Dec 30, 2002 12:48 pm

Using Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5.
I had four of these 1X-rated discs left from before 4X DVD-R media came out. (I bought them on sale for 50% off, just to try them out).
Anyway, I tried burning one at 2X today and it worked (took only 18 minutes, including finalizing, to burn 2.5 gigs).

The disc plays fine :)
Burners only:

Pioneer DVR-111D

DRU-500A with fw 1.0f burns KHypermedia 1X DVD-Rs at 2X

Postby STB on Tue Dec 31, 2002 2:36 pm

OK. I bought 5 of these very early after I bought my DRU-500A. So far I have burn 3 coasters. Yes I've upgraded to 1.0f. Yes I can burn them info coaster at 2x. What I have seen is that these disks fail somewhere around 60-70%. Your 2.5Gig may not have been enugh to get to the failure spot. All of my experence is with NERO ver 5.5.9.17. Interestingly I just found that it fails in simulation mode. All of my tests have been with between 4.2-4.5GB.

I will try Record Max DX [just dl'd it].

Any chance you can try a larger burn?

Follow up....

I just tried to burn 3.5GB in 'test only' mode in Record Now DX. It failed. I was not watching directly, but it was more than 60% done. I got the following message...

Data Job Untitled2 Terminated with errors.

Error -10 at Sector 1026496 - Disc Write Errir - Command 2A Sense:03 ASC:0C ASCQ:08

I saw KHypermedia DVD+RW media at J&R Computer World in New York City, 10 pack at $29.88 and I have a Sony DRX-500UL w/ firmware 1.0f.

I gathered the response STB received from KHypermedia translates to "don't even think about it".

I bought a 5-pack of these discs from OfficeMax sometime in November. Three of the discs were burned at 1X, and the last two were burned at 2X with firmware 1.0f. All but one of the discs contained over 4GB of data, and all were burned with Nero 5.5.9.17. No errors encountered with any of the discs, although I did toss one of them due to an authoring error that was my fault.

I originally bought some 4X Ritek discs from Meritline. They only burned at 2X on my Sony drive. However they burned at 4X on my A05. I was being told by users on this forum and other forums that Meritline was selling inferior or "fake" Ritek discs and further encouraged to buy them froom Hyper micro instead. I bought some from Hyper micro and found that according to ADVDINFO they are identical to the discs from Meritline. They also burn at 4X on the A05 and 2X on the Sony. Nothing wasted however since they work fine on the A05 and nothing else seems to work at all. I am beginning to suspect that either there is something wrong with my Sony DRU-500A causing it not to work at 4X or there is no media that is compaitible with it.
I also noticed that Hyper micro specified 4X on the A05 and the Sony drive was not mentioned.

Another tip I was given was to downgrade the Sony drive to 1.0d and it would burn the Ritek discs at 4X. Can anyone verifiy that or is this more chasing of my tail?

Thought you might like to know.......

There must be som bad batches.
I have now (in between my other burns with different media) burned four KHypmermedia discs (one blank left only) and all four were fine.

I used my DRU-500A (firmware 1.0d and 1.0f) and Stomp RecordNow Max 4.1 and 4.5 on these discs.

The last media I used was from Hyper Microsystems. It is exactly like the media from Meritline which I was being told was not the "good" stuff. Turns out this is the exact same media. It also works (or don't work) exactly the same.

I'm not sure that KHypmermedia is the same as Hyper Microsystems. It don't look exactly the same but the media sounds the same. I am not sure if it the media or the drive. I am beginning to suspect the drive(s) because the media works fine on my A05.
The good news is that it don't make coasters, it burns them at 2X so that is one good thing about it.

I think you are right, Khypermedia & Hyper Micro are not the same. I called Hyper Micro and asked if they knew who made their generic dvd-r's. They said "Leida" which I don't think work on the DRU-500a. The Khypermedia's have worked for me.

The generic DVD-R's I have bought from Hypermicro have the manufacturer label of LEDA in the disc info. They burn fine at 2x for me on my 500A (only rated at 1x)

That's good to know. I didn't see it on the forum list of working media, so I assumed they didn't. They seem to be a good deal then.

What I ordered from Hyper Microsystems was Ritek 4X media. It was not generic. The media they sent me, acoording to ADVDINFO, is in fact Ritek 4X media not generic. Both the media from Hyper Microsystems and Meritline were identical according to ADVDINFO. That is the only 4X media I have tried on the Sony and it burned at 2X not 4X. All other media I have tried has worked. The Ritek 4X media from both sources did burn at 4X on my A05 but not on my Sony DRU-500A..........
