Pioneer - DVD-106S and compatible media

Postby DeeLight on Mon Dec 30, 2002 6:45 pm

Hi, I was gonna buy this drive, but everywhere I read, it's written that is supports DVD-R & DVD-RW. I wanted to know... does it support DVD+R & DVD+RW media as well?

According to Ian's review of the drive and also from Pioneer's website, your Pioneer 106S does NOT supoort DVD+R or DVD+RW media.

The review was written on 4-9-2001 when there was no DVD+R and DVD+RW at all.

Here's Compatibility List DVD-ROM Drives.

Thank You For the correction Kennyshin.

I have the Pioneer 105S with the region free firmware 1.33 and looked on that list of compatible DVD drives. That lists states that my drive supports DVD+R and DVD+RW, but when I run Nero's InfoTool on my Pioneer 105S, it states that DVD+R and DVD+RW are not supported. Do you know which source is correct?

Nero InfoTool cannot be always correct. As my thread on Samsung SM-348B demonstrated, some drives can read DVD+R and DVD+RW but does not show it on Nero InfoTool and on press releases.

Different versions of Nero InfoTool may also display different results. Also, firmware revisions and so on. (Sometimes the same model name from the same manufacturer could have different components.)

One other important thing is that sometimes some forum users report wrong information and those could also be included in such tables on DVDplusRW, VCDHelp and other places. (Too many drives and players.)

I think all popular Pioneer DVD-ROM can read DVD+R and DVD+RW without serious problems.

Thanks, I think I can buy it then, and not worry that DVD+R/RW won't be supported. DVDplusRW does say that this model supports both +R/RW.
