Is Princo DVD-RW worse than Princo CD-RW?

Postby Kennyshin on Wed Dec 25, 2002 5:26 pm

Seriously. DVD-RW 4.7GB has about six times more capacity than 700MB CD-RW. There are 24x CD-RW and 12/10/8x CD-RW (disregarding anything slower) compared to 1x DVD-RW (2x DVD-RW will be available beginning from Q1 2003) while 1x DVD is about the speed of 10x CD. Some people are happy with Princo CD-RW while some others think they are worth nothing and better not use them even if they are given for free. I have seen very few people who actually use a large number of DVD-RW media and none who praises it.

So if 1. you can buy Princo 10x CD-RW 700MB media for $0.5 each and Princo 1x DVD-RW 4.7GB media for the same price, 2. you already have an optical storage drive that can write to CD-RW and DVD-RW media, and 3. you need some rewritable media to add data into discs already written or replace some part of them and experiment with some ISO images, VCD, DVD-Video, CD Audio, DVD Audio, and so on, which would you choose to buy?

I did a test on some 700mb CDRW's incl. the Princo brand.

Princo was the only one that gave some errors when slightly overburned.

Personally I wouldn't trust Princo CDRW with my data.

I wish I had a DVD-RW to answer your other question.

Happy Holidays!

I'll have to conclude like this:

Most optical storage enthusiasts are not interested in Princo CD-RW and Princo DVD-RW.

I'll wait for cheap (under $1) 2.4x and 4x DVD+RW.

I even tried some unbranded 700 mb CDRW that had better performance than the Princo.

Sometimes I had to reformat various media in order to get a good overburn result, but the Princo for my tests were the worst.

Thanks. Some of the first CD-RW media I used were made by Ritek in late 1999. The importer/reseller told me they were all 4x-rated but some of the 100 disks I bought were not able to write at 4x but only at 2x. I didn't re-write more than a few times with any media. About the same time, I had a similar quantity of Princo CD-RW. Nothing particular. The drives I had were LG 4x, Panasonic 4x, Teac 4x, Yamaha 4x, etc. Later, some more Princo, Lite-On, Yamaha. I also once bought a full box of Princo CD-R. 50 x 10-disc spindle. I liked to visit those who imported the media directly and sold to other resellers. I have had no problem with either Princo CD-R or Princo CD-RW.

However, I read a lot of people reporting bad experiences with Princo CD-R and CD-RW in both South Korean forums and most popular English-language CD recordable-related forums. In general, Princo seems to have had the worst reputation.

I was wondering whether to invest in Princo -RW media again. Better wait and see more. Some people on many DVDR-related forums say Princo DVD-R media are the worst and plain crap. Some others say they have successfully recorded onto them. All my cloest friends except one individual strongly recommends to completely disregard them.

South Korean companies like LG, Samsung, Seahan, and SKC often invite consumers to their factories to let them see how the media, drives, and panels are manufactured and packaged, but usually not over 100 at one time.

I have been using Princo -R/W DVD's for quite some time with no problems on any of the burners that I use. I use the Sony DRU-500A, A05 (about the only thing that works reliably on this drive) and the Pioneer A04. These are the aqua blue colored media from Princo.

1. Princo will begin to ship 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW soon but they are not yet saying exactly when.

2. Princo will continue to produce 2x DVD-R and 1x DVD-RW as they believe there are still a large number of Pioneer DVR-A03 and Pioneer DVR-A04 users.

3. Princo has no plan to produce DVD+R and DVD+RW media but they say it might change according to market demand.

I haven't tried Princo CD-RW or DVD-RW, however, their CD-R and DVD-R media works well for me.

I bought 10 Melody 1x DVD-RW disks probably made by Princo, Taiwan and packaged in 3mm slim-type jewel case for 2,000 South Korean Won per each unit. 5 for myself and the other 5 for someone who accompanied me to buy the DVD-R media. Melody 1x DVD-R has CMC code while Melody 1x DVD-RW has Princo code.

I have used Princo cdr's by hundreds.

I use them to make autorun cds with literature and videos.

I burn with Yamaha 20x10x40x burners at 20x.

When this media is used on Yamaha 24x10x40x burner they burn at 16x.

I just got a Pioneer A05 and bought afew Princo dvd-r's to test.
I'll let you all know.
The more I figure out, the more I realize how little I know.
