There is no latest without JLMS. JLMS (JVC + Lite-On) make Lite-Ons DVD-ROM drives. Why does it matter anyway? Just get the latest JLMS firmware.

Modify the firmware to say Lite-ON using a hex editor

BTW, how can I modify the firmware ? Don't I need the binary file? And how do I extract that, litefirm works only with CDRW firmwares.
And if I extract the binary firmware, then how do I flash it ?

You don't really need to extract the firmware as it is in there un-encrypted. Open the flasher in a hex editor or as a cinary and search for 116s or something. Play around and see what happens. digi's site has binaries available. You could use mtkflash to back up your drive's firmware after you flashed it, etc...

What name do you want it to have?
Code: Select all
LITEON  DVD-ROM LTD-166S

not
Code: Select all
JLMS XJ-HD166S

Yep, that's about it, I would like for the drive to indentify itself as LITE-ON LTD-166S.
I will try changing the name in the firware, see how it goes, but don't these firmwares flashers have a checksum or something ?

Desparado84 and Alexandrus, I'm still interested in hearing the answer to Scott's question: why do you need/want to do this? Is there some program you have that will work when the drive is identified as LITE-ON LTD-166S but not when identified as JLMS XJ-HD166S? I've never heard of such a thing (for a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive), so I am curious.

By the way, Desperado84, it isn't just the firmware update on the LiteOn site that changes the name. Your new drive will already come with firmware identifying itself as JLMS DVD-ROM LTD-166S.

There's no real need to do this, it is just that I am a maniac and I would like for my drive to identify itself as LITE-ON LTD-166S and not JLMS XJ-HD166S.
