RPCDE - a fix to the ASPI bug!

Postby dimitri on Sat Dec 21, 2002 5:56 am

Hi

If you're one of those having problems running RPCDE in WinXP/2K, there's a fix to the aspi bug.
It should now run fine without ANY aspi installed!
Please download at this temporary page, unzip, test and report.

Thanks in advance 8)

Bingo! That did the trick for me. I have a 166S with firmware DS0B. I had previously reported that while I was able to get Rpcde to work under Windows 2000 SP2, that it wouldn't work under Windows 2000 SP3. The new vesion does work under SP3 as well, and without any need to enable the Windows 98 compatibility layer. Now I can run Rpcde on 98, on 2000, under SP2, under SP3, with 98 compatibility layer, without 98 compatibility layer, with ASPI, without ASPI, in a plane, on a train, in a house, with a mouse... I can run Rpcde anywhere!! (With apologies to Dr. Seuss). :D

Thanks Dimitri. Good work!

Thanks for testing&reporting Cfitz!

Looks like a winner here, bye bye compatibility mode! :D
I got confirmations from a couple of WinXp users as well.

Still needs to be tested on "aspi free" systems. The guy who found and fixed this bug say it should not need no aspi.

Cheers 8)

I did test it on an ASPI free system. Okay, it had ASPI on it at one point, but I removed ASPI to do the test. And it gave me no problem. I wasn't kidding when I said "... with ASPI, without ASPI ..."

I tested it on:

Windows 98 with ASPI 4.6
Windows 2000 SP2 with ASPI 4.6
Windows 2000 SP2 without ASPI
Windows 2000 SP3 with ASPI 4.5.7
Windows 2000 SP3 without ASPI
Windows 2000 SP3 with ASPI 4.5.7 and Windows 98 Compatibility Layer

Then I got tired of moving my drive around and installing/uninstalling ASPI

You're my man Cfitz, thanks for this scientific testing!

Ok, 2 more things:

1. Many thanks to Chris who found the bug, fixed it and let us have it

2. I made a bit of a cosmetic improvement, hoping to eliminate the disable/enable confusion, which has happened to quite a few.

This improved "version" is just up on the server. Have a look:

some will notice I've changed the version number too

To recap: Winxp/2k users can now forget W98 compatible mode and all aspi hassle

cheers
