just back from seeing the film.
well, it is a good movie and very enjoyable, definitely more so than SW episode II.

however i was very disappointed with how much the story deviates from the book. much much worse than the first film (Fellowship of the Ring).
...
there's an expression in Hebrew (is there an equivalent/translation in English?) - "Tolkien must be turning in his grave now", seeing what was done to his work.
i wonder, how and from whom the producers/director/writers got the permission to use the story and to change it. JRRT was very meticulous, pedantic and inflexible about his work and it being changed. i know he wouldn't have approved. his son Christopher continued his work, published some of his unpublished writings, wrote about his work etc. it would seem unlikely that he would participate in what JRRT would probably consider a raping of his work.
or maybe it's just a LOT of money?
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the land of Mordor, where the Shadows lie
