Memorex 40x (Taiyo Yuden: Made In Japan) at Future Shop

Postby seaegg on Wed Dec 18, 2002 3:23 pm

Just thought I'd let the Canadian forum members know that Future Shop is selling 50 spindles of Memorex 40x (Black screw top,Taito Yuden Made in Japan) for $29.99. I wasn't planning on buying any blanks but just happened to wander over to that section of the store and saw them. Needless to say I picked up a couple. 50 Fujis cost $49.95 so I figuredI could as well save myself 50 bucks.

Your welcome I figured the fellas would be interested. I had actually written an email to their Purchasing Dept in regards to their lack of High Speed blanks and they has said they would be in stock by Sept 21 well I guess 3 months late is about par for the course up here. AT least we got them. By the way if you're interested A & B sell Fuji 2x DVD-Rs for $7.99 made by Taiyo Yuden.

I just found 48x Fuji's @ Wal-Mart $9.59 for a 10 pack, and @ Zehr's (Grocery store) for roughly the same price. Canadian Tire even had the 48x Fuji's! Does Future Shop carry them yet? NO.
Staples does though.

It's pretty sad when a grocery store & Auto Parts store carries them and Canada's largest electronics retailer doesn't have them yet (or ever).

I just got an e-mail from my dad is Florida, he got 2 spindles (100) of the Imation 48x discs for the $7.99 after mail in rebate.
Of which, I get one spindle and he keeps the other.
cfitz posted it here: http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8068
I e-mailed Dad the link and he bought 2 of them. What a nice guy.

Damn, we could use some rebates up here!

For our American friends a 100 spindle of brand name media {Fuji & Maxell etc} sells for about $85 CDN (+15% taxes here in Ontario) = $99. or about $59 USD with no rebates.

Hey seaegg thanks for the info, but I couldn't find them on FutureShop's website? All I could find were the Memorex 32x for 29.99 on their site. Is it something which isn't listed on the site and only in the stores? I plan to go to FutureShop tommorow and get some if they are still available.

WOW Action Jackson, that sure is a good deal. I never come to know about these stores  . I only know those ones which advertise in the local computer paper.

100pc TY 32x for $39.

Are those silver/blue TY's with no top surface logo or silk screening?

Either way, that's the cheapest I've seen TY's in Canada.

About two months ago, I bought a spindle of 100pcs (those white spindle, not wrapped). When I look @ the disc, it sure is made by Princo. However, all ATIP identifying programs tell me it's TY. I don't know how true it is, because I have used many Princo OEM discs before. The code on the disc starts with P and has 14-15 digits.

Maybe C&P have some real good stuff...

Was the TY screw cap on top of the spindle you bought? So what's the deal, you know its Princo and programs say its TY. Vendor says they are TY. Price makes them look like Princo. :-?
ActionJackson did you buy that spindle and see if it really was a TY?

Absolutely NO black cap or any cap...but just like those OEM Princo discs on many computer shops' about four months ago where they had batches of those "unwrapped" white spindles of 100pcs.

I have scanned two real OEM TY discs (see the frosty center):

http://www.geocities.com/rrazorrx/disc.jpg
(I know it's not very clear)

Seems to me no matter OEM TY or TY for TDK/Fuji/Memorex, they all have frosty ring instead of clear plastic.

I never bought that 100 pc spindle before.

I really don't need to since I've got about 200 pc's of TY, 30 Kodak and a bunch of other stuff now.

I did read about someone on another forum stating that when they bought those 100 pc's, the ATIP showed it was TY as well.

The forum is www.redflagdeals.net

The Memorex are in their stores and unfortunately I have never seen Fuji CDRs selling in Future Shop. I know you can get them at Staples, Real Canadian Superstores, Wal-Mart and A & B Sound.

Here in Toronto, I've seen FutureShop carry Fuji media.

Real Canadian Superstores? A & B Sound? I've never heard of those stores before. I've got to get out more!

I think I'll pick up a few 100pc spindles of that TY stuff this week. More rumours [again] of the levy on recordable media means more expensive media if it's ever instituted.

A & B Sound only have stores in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Also I live in Winnipeg and I guess we're lucky we even have Future Shop stores much less having the luxury of them selling Fuji CDRs.
I hardly buy anything in Winnipeg because of the limited supply of quality items. Believe it or not the Office Depot in Winnipeg doesn't even sell blank DVDs and when you go to Staples up here to buy any you're extremely fortunate if they have more than 5 in stock. We Canadians are too easy going by half and need to tell these retailers to either stock what we want or we'll buy everything from either another province or in the States. I wrote a strongly worded letter to Future Shop regarding their CDRW stock and selection as well as their prices basically saying that every week a ton of Canadian money goes south of the border because of the inept purchasing and stocking practices by the major Retailers in Canada. I just hope these Memorex is a first step. I'd rather drive 3 miles to buy what I want instead of buying online and having to wait 10 days for my item but if they won't stock what I want then more power to the US.

hmm... CNP "Taiyo Yuden" 100 for $38CDN

Postby fishyfrank on Fri Dec 20, 2002 12:12 am

The ATIP says "yes":

Manufacturer : Taiyo Yuden
Code : 97m24s01f
Disc Type : CD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : Dye Type 1: Long Strategy (Cyanine, AZO)
Recording Speed : n/a
Capacity : 79:59.74
703 MB
Additional Capacity : n/a
Overburn Capacity : not tested

but the look (inner ring & serial) and performance says: "NO"

I only managed a successful burn at 8x and I still had damaged sectors.

I've used HP&Fuji TY's, Kodak, Ritek, Prodisc with no problems.

Only Sony disks gave me similar problems.

Lesson learned. :-?

I still believe that these discs aren't TY, but just ordinary Princo.

I agree with RazorX. These discs do look like Princo. The C&P store even used the same image for the TY and Princo. Plus the store is selling Princo for 35 and TY for 38, so by tricking us they earn 3 bucks more on the same pack. :x
The deal at FutureShop looks better, I plan to go there tommorow and pick up those Memorex's if they are still available. They are also 40x. But that deal isn't on their website, so could it be that it is a special in seaegg's area? Anyone else found that Memorex spindle in a futureshop near them?

Well that C&P store doesn't have any more TY 100pc spindles in stock. He said to get the Xcitek spindle instead b/c "it's the same thing".

Eeeeeeeck!

I would've taken the Ritek spindle but at that point, I just didn't trust the salesperson.

About two weeks ago, I bought a 100pcs blank CDs (blank top OEM) for $27, those discs turned out to be Plasmon. Quite good, and the disc coating is thick!

All this talk of cd-r's is making me want to go to Wal-Mart and buy a 10 pack of Fuji's to test out. I'm curious to see if 48x Fuji's will burn @ 52x error free.

Actually, Zehrs grocery store is closer and cheaper by about 20 cents. They'd be less of a line up this time of year too.

"Honey, I have to step out for a minute to the grocery store...".

I just came back from Future Shop and Best Buy. I found the 40 x Memorex TYs in Future Shop for 29.99. There was only 1 box available though which was also broken so I decided to wait for a newer stock on Boxing Day. BEWARE for the same price in the same aisle are the Memorex 40x which were MADE IN TAIWAN. Looks like Future Shop's trick.
In Best Buy I found even a better deal. They are selling Memorex 48x 10 pack MADE IN JAPAN for 9.99 with jewel cases. I bought a pack. Then I picked up my LiteOn 48x24x48 for 83 bucks. :)
Hope the deals help. After we get some more Canadian members at CDRlabs, maybe we can get a hot deals thread going for Canadian Stores and retailers.

I forgot to mention that Future Shop had Memorex 40x made in Taiwan mixed up in those as well but you can distinguish the TY made ones by the black screw tops. The Future Shop on Pembina in Winnipeg had a ton of the TY made ones. They were in a 3-4 ft stack.
