PS2 and DVD Format Question

Does anyone know if the Sony Playstation 2 will play DVD formats like DVD-R, DVD+R, and etc?

PS2s versions 1-4 will ONLY play -R and -RW. PS2 versions 5-7 will play -R, -RW, +R and +RW. Movies can be played without any modifications to the console. Games on recordable DVDs require that one installs a chip known as a modchip.
