Postby rosey on Sun Dec 15, 2002 10:25 am

I have just got a CDRW with Nero express!
I installed the program and went to burn a few CDs

However, when i go to Burn, the program freezes and i get an error message saying SCSI/IDE error

What does this mean? Do i need to install anything else??#

Please help!

thats no way to ask a question, you have to tell us what your computer specs are, like operating system, hardware (to the best of your ability), hard drive setup (ide cable setup)

A little more detail would help. I don't know your level of expertise. Do you know how to give more detail, or are you a novice and don't know what details to tell us?

I'll add to hoxlund's list:

CD-R or CD-RW?
Data, audio or video CD?
Are you copying a disc, or making one from scratch?
How far into the burn does it get before the error message?
What settings did you use (describe all the steps you took to get to the error).

Nero express has a button marked "Save" that shows up in the dialog box that appears after the burn has finished. It allows you to save the log file with details about the burn just completed. Click save, and post the contents of the log file here.

To answer your direct question, no, nothing more than Nero needs to be installed.

that was a little harsh cfitz, but anyways, sounds like a DMA issue, if you are only using 1 hard drive and 1 cd drive, i would recommend putting your cd drive on a seperate ide chain, make it master of that ide chain

also go into your system devices, and enable dma on your burner, if you need more help, ill need to know which operating system you are using

I truly wasn't trying to be harsh and didn't realize I had come across that way. What struck you as harsh? I'd like to correct it if possible.

Yes, my question about being a complete novice was a straightforward one with no implications or connotations. This is Rosey's first post here, so I really don't know what her/his level of expertise is. So I just asked directly. No harshness or judgement intended.

Spec - to the best of my ability!

Postby rosey on Sun Dec 15, 2002 2:48 pm

OK, firstly, i'm terribly sorry for not asking the question correctly! The reason i am on this forum, is coz i don't know whats wrong, therefore, i don't know what you need!

OK, I am running under Windows 98SE
I have a Mirror CDRW which is running as a master on the secondary IDE chain. (Primary taken by HD and CD ROM)
Trying to Use Nero express (which came with the CDRW)
It If i am making a compilation CD of audio, this is when it freezes (whilst analyzing the *cda files)
If i just copy disc to disc, this is when the SCSI/IDE error occurs.

Copying data discs is not a problem! I can do that?

Please advise!

Cheers

It sounds like you are having trouble doing digital audio extraction from your CD-ROM drive. What is the brand and model of that drive?

As a quick check to see if the problem lies with the CD-ROM or your system's connection to it, try putting the audio CD in the Mirror burner drive and copying / extracting from that drive instead of the CD-ROM drive (since you will be using the same drive as both the source and destination, you will have to remove the audio CD and put in the blank CD-R when prompted. Also Nero will have to make a temporary copy of the audio data on your hard disc. Nero will do this automatically, but make sure you have enough room available).

Does that make any difference?

Success!

Postby rosey on Sun Dec 15, 2002 3:42 pm

Yes! Thankyou!

That worked a treat! So do the songs remain on the HD? or are they erased after burning?

Also, does this mean i need to get a newer CD ROM in order to burn disc to disc?

Thanks for your help!

Great! That is progress.

They are stored in a temporary file that is erased after burning. However, if you want to extract the songs to your hard disc and have them remain, that can be done also.

Not necessarily. There may be some configuration change that can be made to get it working. Right-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop, select "Properties", and choose the "Device Manager". Within device manager, expand the CD-ROM icon, and select your CD-ROM drive. Right-click it, select "Properties", and choose the "Settings" Tab. Report to us the brand, model, and firmware version listed. Also tell us whether the box marked "DMA" is checked. Repeat the same for the Mirror burner, just for interest.

so songs are only deleted, if you want to delete them, and if you plan on copying from disc to disc, than yes, i would recommend getting a more modern cd rom drive, maybe even a dvd drive

but if you want to copy like games, programs, you would not use the standard nero disc copy, you would use other software, because many games, and programs use copy protection on their cd's

there is a way around this, just search for clonecd on google, or use the search feature in these forums

you want to turn all dma settings on, for every device, weather it be hard drive, or cd drives

If you are feeling a little daring (not much, but a little) I am going to suggest checking the DMA box for both those drives. You will be asked to reboot the system. That should make data transfer to and from the drives faster and more efficient. After you do that, run another test with the old CD-ROM and see it helps any.
