time taken to convert DVD to VCD

Postby cd pirate on Mon Dec 09, 2002 9:43 pm

i have an old computer and to convert a 90min DVD to a good quality VCD it takes me about 6 hours! my cpu is only 600mhz. i was wondering, if i bought a new 2.4 ghz P4 how long would it take to convert a DVD to a good quality VCD.

any info would be much appreciated. :)

There are too many variables to say with any certainty. However, keeping the same settings as you are currently using, cutting your encode time below 3 hours would seem to be within the grasp of a 2.4 P4. Frankly, 6 hours is already quite fast for a 600 MHz system.

i did a test recently. i converted a 47 min dvd to a very high quality vcd. with my 600mhz comp it took me just under 4 hours. i then did the exact same test with all the same settings on a 1ghz laptop. it took me 2hours and 38 minutes. with just a 400mhz increase i saved almost an hour and a half. doing a full dvd-vcd i could save 3 hours with just a 400mhz boost. i think it could be very possible to cut the time below 3 hours on a P4 2.4ghz doing a high qaulity conversion. :D
