Yes, it uses CAV when rewriting.

At 48x it uses CAV.. but at 40x and 32x it uses P-CAV.

Assuming that LTR-48246S and LTR-48125S are pretty much the same, why should LTR-48125S write P-cav at 48x then?

I don't think the LTR-48125S writes 48x at P-CAV. It uses CAV for 48x too. Look at Ian's review http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.ph ... e=Features
The LTR-48246S and the LTR-48125S are pretty much the same when it comes to writing methods. In RW, the LTR-48246S uses CAV just like the LTR-52246S.
In short the LTR-48246S has the writing methods of the LTR-48125S and the RW of the LTR-52246S with the same chipset as the LTR-52246S.

Let us know what you find out. It is possible it is a typo. Or they may be referring to the writing method used at less than maximum speed. Only the top speed on these drives is CAV, the lower speeds are P-CAV or CLV. Here is the list from Ian's review of the LTR-48125W:

48x (CAV)
40x, 32x, 24x (P-CAV)
16x, 12x, 8x, 4x (CLV)

Ian's review us well written but ut's a bit old. New firmware have been published since the review and maybe one of them featured 48X P-cav writing...?

Anyone here has the drive or the 48X24X48 with the lastest firmware so we could check it?

I have the LTR-48246S with firmware VSS09 which is the latest. Here is a screenshot confirming its still using CAV Image
All the firmwares of this drive and the 52x one are only improving "media compatibility". I think more than having P-CAV for 48x they should concentrate on the RW which isn't living upto expectations.

I don't think it can be dome and it's why Lite-On won't update Rewriting with P-cav..

:( Why not?? I had heard other members and even Ian say that they could solve it in a future firmware, so I thought technically it was possible. Ex: Ian in his review of the CenDyne 52x said "Unfortunately, the drive did not do as well as I would have hoped in our rewriting tests. For some reason the drive took longer to rewrite at 24x than at 16x. Hopefully CenDyne can fix this problem in a future firmware update. "
Seeing that these will be one of the last CD-RW drives we will see from Lite-On they should concentrate on making them better shouldn't they?

Just for informational purposes, have a look at my media tests at CDFreaks. The speed of the 24x RW burn is about 15 sec. faster than 16x on my 52246S drive, (6s07). But what caught my attention was the high(er) error rates on the 16x CLV burn. Also the comparitively low error rate on the media in general, better than many CDR's. Certainly better than many high-speed RW media. Whatever LiteOn's reasons for using CAV, they're doing something right. I hope that they will soon give us a 32x RW firmware, as was rumored when the new drives first came out.
