Do Ultra Wide SCSI CD-RW/DVD-ROM exsist ?

Hello,

I am trying to track down a Ultra Wide SCSI (or better) CD-RW/DVD-ROM?

Does anyone manufacture such a beast ????

If so could you please pass along any info it would be greatly appreciated.

I can never keep all the SCSI terminology strait but Yamaha has a SCSI-3 CD-RW drive Called the CRW-F1ZS. If I’m not mistaken SCSI-3 is a 68 pin bus 16bit wide 40 MB sec transfer rate.

The Plex 40 wide reader will only do 24x max DAE, I know because i own one. The newer narrow versions with 1.1xx firmware and newer electronics will do 40x DAE.
If you want a fast SCSI reader get the narrow one. But yes that doesn't help him with a wide burner. Plex is sposed to be releasing a 40x narrow burner if they haven't already.
Pioneer used to make a SCSI DVD drive but I think it's pretty slow by latest standards and I think they don't make it now anyways.

It depends on what revision of drive you have. I have the 40x narrow with the newest firmware but it's an older revision and does 24x PCAV max. I know a few people with the 40x wide that can do 40x cav DAE.

There are no Ultra Wide SCSI CD-RW that I know of. I personaly talked to Plextor about any plans to produce one. They told me that it is not there policy to discuss future plans. I do not understand why CD-RW makers stick with only narrow SCSI which is at least a 10 year old interface. It has many shortcomings and I for one would trade the latest numbers 52/16/52 etc for a decent Ultra Wide SCSI CD-RW. The first and bigest shortcoming is the internal narrow SCSI cable (50 pin) which is fatter then the newer Ultra Wide SCSI (68 pin) cable. This narrow SCSI cable is a pain to work with inside a case and cuts on airflow as well. By the way SCSI-3 is Ultra SCSI (20 mg/s) and is not Ultra wide (40 mg/s). You are also limited to 7 devices with narrow SCSI. This a problem for a stack of CD-RW. Cable lenght is also a problem as you are limited to 1.5 meter or 4.5 feet which means that you cannot have an external device (say a SCSI scanner) on the same chain. SCSi manufacturers if you are listening: please give up narrow SCSI for internal devices, it is time to move on to the newer interface. Most motherboard equiped with on board SCSI controller support Ultra Wide and LVD SCSI (Ultra 160 & Ultra 320).. CAN we have one manufacturer produce one CD-RW in Ultra Wide SCSI format??? Plextor are you listening???
