Hmmm. I wonder if the idea is defeat copy protection programs like CloneCD and BlindWrite that attempt to read every raw bit on the disc and duplicate the same. I imagine the points truly are unreadable, rather than being nonsense data, and don't even have a good groove tracking through them. If they are large enough that would cause the laser to lose lock and get all confused. So maybe with this sort of copy protection you can't just blindly read all the bits but instead must know where to seek around the bad dots.
When you look at the CD, can you tell if there is nothing at all written in the ring that that contains the dots, or does the silvered layer look the same across the whole disc with the exception of the dots?
Just musing. Anyone have definitive knowledge?
