Memorex DVD+R/RW drive? Good, Bad?

Postby shaggai on Wed Dec 04, 2002 6:01 pm

Just stopped into Best Buy and noticed that they have the Memorex drive at 299. with a -100.00 rebate, for a net cost of 199. after rebate.

Is it worth it compared to the Sony DRU-500A, or any of the impending dual-RW format DVD drives? Will it offer the same firmware speed increase (for 4x medium) that they are promising with the Sony?

Thanks for any info.

PS. This is in New Jersey, in USA $'s.

Like the other DVD+R/RW drives currently available, its based on the Ricoh MP5125A. I really doubt the drive is capable of 4x writing speeds since Ricoh has already announced their new drive design with this feature.

Unlikely that any of the 2.4x DVD+R writers will be able to write at 4x speed with firmware updates.

Except for the dual format DRU-500A ;)
That firmware upgrade is expected to be released within the next few days.

Even if it's only 2.4x $199 is still a good deal.
