Firmware Download at the JLMS (LITEON) site ??!

Postby dimitri on Fri Nov 29, 2002 1:26 pm

This is a bit of a mixed feeling post.

The JLMS site, which takes care of Liteon's dvd drives, has all the firmware download on hold, for nearly a month now. If you try to click the download link you get this stupid Image "constructing" box and no download.

One side effect of this is that my site gets overloaded with data trafic, which I don't mind but my domain hosts do. One is threatening and one has already blocked me for a couple of days. No big deal, I took care of that.

But I wanted to tell you ppl, that you can still get them firmwares directly from them, by clicking on these (undocumented) links:

http://www.jlms.com.tw/webfw/LTD-163/D163GH5Q.zip

http://www.jlms.com.tw/webfw/LTD-163D/D163DGHR6.zip

http://www.jlms.com.tw/webfw/LTD-165H/D165HCH0Q.zip

Why mixed feelings? because the top 2 are deadly dangerous for your drive and it might be the reason for suspending the downloads at the first place!

Still, I thought you have the right for this info.

Take care

I should have made it more clear to start with. Becuse I'm confronted with it on a daily basis, I presumed (wrongly) that everyone will know what I meant.. Sorry about that.

The Problem is the new Windows upgrade utility. While some owners flashed without a hitch, many had the system crashing during the upgrade, leaving the EEPROM erased and the drive "dead". Trying to reflash will fail because the drive is not recognizable. Some system refuse to boot up with the drive connected. I even got a couple of complaints about damages to cdrw's connected on the same IDE channel.
Most, but not all could be revived using Mtkflash and binary firmware.

I repeat that not everyone has problems with those 2 firmwares (GHR6 and GH5Q) but imho it's not worth it to take the risk. I have DOS versions of them on my site, which I made by extracting the binaries from the Windows exec's and putting them into a previous original Liteon DOS upgrader.

Hi Dimitri,

I have looked on your site:

http://www.angelfire.com/art/zom/binaries.htm

And the "How-to" page for using mktflash is not coming up. Could you please give me the correct URL? I need to use it now that the Ds0F killed my drive :(

Thanks.

OK no problems, but I never gave the Angelfire link anywhere.
I'm using it mainly to store download files. I don't want to put the pages there becuse of adds/banners but have to put some htm pages, otherwise they're not happy.

Please keep on using the links in my sig - all 3 have the complete site.
