Aopen 12x DVD-ROM - can't enable UDMA

I would appreciate some help getting UDMA enabled on my Aopen 12x DVD-ROM drive. I'm running Windows XP, the drive is device 1 on the first IDE controller. In device manager, I have "UDMA if available" selected, but it will only use PIO mode. Also, everything is set to auto in the BIOS, so UDMA should work. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful. This is REALLY slowing down the drive's performance.

also, if you have a Via chipset, install the 4-in-1 drivers and the IDE miniport drivers that come with a DMA Tool.

I tried switching it back and forth between PIO mode and DMA if available (and re-booting in between), and I also installed the latest 4-in-1 drivers you suggested. Still no luck.

but my OS is on the same channel as the DVD-ROM drive, so I don't think I should uninstall the primary IDE controller.

OK, I understand what you are saying..my guess is you're running WinXP. what I have done inthe past is to delete the channel the offending drive is on (have done it on the primary where the boot HD is). once you reboot the machine, it will find it and reinstall it. after reinstalling it, it will then go to the correct mode.

this is only what I have done. using this method is doing so at your own risk.

if it were me, I'd do it. but then again I do a lot of crazy stuff at work with computers all the time.

Well, I decided to go for it....it worked! After uninstalling the primary IDE controller and rebooting, the drive is now in UDMA mode 2. To test it, I made an on-the-fly copy of a 550 MB CD at 40x, and it worked flawlessly in 2 minutes 50 seconds (it used to take almost 7 minutes for the same CD). Mike_s104, thanks for the advice.

I have had them move back to PIO..so if you notice your machine going slow while making a CD and it taking too long to burn..check those settings again

i had originally put that warning into the FAQ because it seemed to me that to uninstall the IDE channel of the OS hard drive could be asking for trouble (i don't know in certainty). however i've had indications before (on another thread) that it might be OK.

can you please confirm that you have tried uninstalling the IDE channel on which the OS hard drive (usually Primary) and then let XP re-detect the IDE channel, and it works OK?
did you have to reboot, or did windows redetect and reinstall the IDE channel without a reboot (as it does when removing the other channel) ?

if it works fine, i can remove the warning in the FAQ.

Yes, I uninstalled the primary controller, which contained:

Device 0 - HDD with OS (Windows XP)
Device 1 - Aopen 1240 DVD-ROM

Sorry, I can't tell you whether or not windows re-detected before the reboot, because I rebooted immediately after. After the reboot, everything came back automatically, except now I had UDMA mode 2 on the DVD-ROM.

as far as I can remember, this is what I did:

1. deleted the channel that the drive was on....
Device-0 IBM Deskstar 30GB HD with WinXP Pro. SP1
Device-1 Sony DRU-500A DVD+-RW

actually, I delete the primary and secondary channels since my DVD-ROM was in PIO too...

2. WinXP stated it needed to be restarted

3. upon reboot, WinXP found the controller and then asked to reboot again.

4. rebooted and checked the device manager. all drives were in DMA.


Since then, I have installed the Via IDE miniport drivers and the controller is now using the Via drivers instead of the MS ones. the Via 4-in-1 does not install this.
