Sony's DRU500a & DVD-R media to be tested (UK)

Postby SonyUser on Fri Nov 22, 2002 10:26 am

Just ordered 2 sample packs of DVD-R media from http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk

The media in each pack are as follows:

1 Zero Defex 1x Speed
1 Zero Defex 2x Speed
1 WhiteLabel 1x Speed
1 Paradox 1x Speed
1 Verbatim 2x Speed
1 TDK 2x Speed
1 VivaStar 1x Speed << These do not work in the Sony DRU500A
1 Intenso 1x Speed
1 'CD-R Media.co.uk' 2x Speed
1 TraxData 1x Speed

As soon as I get the samples, I will test them to see which ones work with the Sony DRU500A.

If anyone wants to add info on media that does not work, please feel free to do so.

I suppose you think you're too good for the other thread we already have going? Or maybe it's that your media is totally different in the UK. Yeah... That's it...

Err ! No, not at all.

I just wanted to place a list for UK users, and as this is a US forum thats well used by all from around the globe, why not include info for UK users here in this forum with details on where to get media that works in the Sony DRU500A.

It's OK for you guys that are in the US with your wide choices of DVD-R media, but us poor old folk in the UK (and other places) don't seem to have the luxury of buying any brand of DVD-R media just like that, media here is hard to get and not cheap, so when you cut a DVD-R disc and it fails it's a bit of a stinker to boot.

You wanna make another smart comment ?

Soneyuser, thanks for the help. I think with the conditon of the available media we all need all the effort we can get to discover what works and what does not work. I know I have spent too much money on crappy media. I have yet to find a brand that works 100% on all of my drives. Even TDK 2X does not seem to work on the A05. So I am sure there are enough questions to be answered to go around.
I also participate in the Uk Forum where I have gotten lots of questions answered. And I have never had any derogatory remarks made to me because I was not from the UK! I thought we were all in this together.
I would personally buy media from anywhere on eath if I thought it would work.

Thanks for the input.........
Have fun.........Bob

So, why can't the people in the UK read the media compatibility thread and then find what brands work and then look for them in their local UK B&M or mail order stores? I guess I'm not seeing the use of having region specific media lists. It's not like the discs are different in the UK than they are in the US. All the media is made in Taiwan anyways. I'm sure some of the brands listed in the large thread are available in the UK. It's not like anyone in that thread has attempted to keep out UK people.

hmm...
probably because there are brands sold in the UK which are not sold in the US and you don't know who the manufacturer is, so you can't use the general (US) compatiblity thread.

anyway, why does it bother you so much? if you don't want to, don't read it...

I agree with the comments about U.K. media as alot of the brands in the U.S. are probably here but rebranded so we don't know which they are.
I am not to sure about the rest of Europe as to whether they have the same brnads as the U.K but it would be great to see which U.K brands work

I have tested the following:

Choice 2x - Burned Ok, but I noticed some playback problems on my Philips DVD 622 player

White Label 2x - Burned OK, haven't tested yet

White Label 1x - failed

Bulkpaq 2x - burned OK, seems to play OK on my player

Bulkpaq 1x - 5/5 coasters

Datasafe Yellow - OK

Mathew: how did you manage to burn on those Bulkpaq 1x DVD-Rs (I still have 20 of them)?

::P Kewl! :P

Just bought another cakebox of 10 PRINCO 2x discs in a local store here in Belgium.
These discs have a white glossy top with print on it, saying: PRINCO - DVD-R - DVD Recordable Disc - For Data & Video - General 1x 2x - 4.7 Gb.
Just tested 4 pcs. with RecordNowMAX 4.5 on the DRU500A firmware 1.0d and guess what??? :lol:
They all burned at 2x !!! Even seconds faster then the CHOICE 2x I used untill now :P

/me happy now !!
PRINCO's 2x cost € 1.50 over here :wink:

www.digitalpromo.co.uk

I haven't seen anything else than Verbatim, TDK and Maxell here in Finland, and they're 7-25 euros ... Guess why I buy my media elsewhere

I only ordered 1 White Label 1x DVD-R and 1 White Label 2x DVD-R.

The 1x DVD-R failed in burning stage, but 2x disc burned ok @ 2x. However, the resulting disc didn't play too well on my Philips DVD 622 player (hanged the player after some 15 minutes of playing)

I don't think I will ever order more of those.

Some more testing:

Traxdata 1x DVD-R: No burning problems (1x), also plays well on my standalone.

Datasafe DVD-RW: Burns and plays well

Media Results (UK)

Postby SonyUser on Thu Nov 28, 2002 8:43 pm

OK, Sorry for the delay with the results of the tests with the media below in the Sony DRU500a, been a little busy here with Christmas just 4 weeks away. :)

1 Zero Defex 1x Speed
ID= VIVASTAR
Burn Failed with a write error :evil:

1 Zero Defex 2x Speed
ID= TDKG02000000
Burn Passed :D

1 Paradox 1x Speed
ID= VIVASTAR
Burn Failed with a write error :evil:

1 WhiteLabel 2x Speed (Verbatim)
ID= MMC00RG200
Burn Failed with write error :evil:

1 TDK 2x Speed
ID= TDKG02000000
Burn Passed :D

1 VivaStar 1x Speed << These do not work in the Sony DRU500A
ID= VIVASTAR
Burn Failed with write error :evil:

1 Intenso 1x Speed
ID= PRODISCG02
Burn Failed with write error :evil:

1 Choice 1x Speed
ID= GSC001
Burn Passed :D

1 'CD-R Media.co.uk' 2x Speed
ID= TDKG02000000
Burn Passed :D

1 TraxData 1x Speed
ID= RITEKG03
Burn Passed :D

Well, the Sony DRU500a is very picky with DVD-R media, watch what you buy !

Disc's that work best are those that are made by TDK and RITEK in my tests here.

As you will see, one of the disc's in the pack has changed, a new disc (Choice) has been added to the list.

The disc that was removed was the Verbatim 2x, not to sure why yet !
