A gear/belt mechanism shouldn't make any difference to speed, in fact in my experience the speed is generally controlled by firmware (try flashing an Aopen with Artec firmware or vice-versa and you'll see what I mean). TEAC burners tend to have very fast eject mechanisms but they are also gear-driven. Gears tend to be noisier than belts, something I find intensely annoying with LiteOn writers (that nasty screeching noise that older LiteOn drives and DVD-ROMs tend to make, eurgh!).
Still wouldn't worry about it though. It might sound cheap but generally LiteOn kit seems to be lasting quite well, despite what LOS says....
