DRU-500A updated alphabetized media list (Nov 9 2002)

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

Postby aponeurosis on Sat Nov 16, 2002 12:06 am

Scuzy,
I have encountered the same problem with khypermedia dvd-r (bought from OfficeMax) using RecordNow Max 4.5 w/ powerburn enable and latest firmware from sony. I have made 2 coasters at the same place on both discs. I will try nero's latest version with the remainder of these dvd-r's and let you know.

VEFF,
Do you know the cheapest place to buy Ritek DVD-R x1 discs? Thanks in advance

Update on khypermedia using nero 5.5.9.17

Postby aponeurosis on Sat Nov 16, 2002 12:38 am

The khypermedia does not work with either RecordNow Max 4.5 and Nero 5.5.9.17 for me (NOT 5.5.9.17.1). It burned a little bit more with Nero. I guess I will be trying Ritek DVD-R next.

It seems some of us have no problems and others do.
Could be that the newer batches are different I guess...

Where did you buy your media? (My discs have blue writing on the top
and the cases are identical in shape and design (rounded corners and gray inside) to the Memorex DVD-R cases).

If I can get the ADVDInfo disc identification utility working (tried it briefly last night, and even with wnaspi32.dll, it still didn't work properly).

Which firmware are you using?

I got mine at Office Max in a 5 pack. Rounded cases. I'll try to get more information later. (scan of the top and info from ADVDInfo)

What error did you get when you tried advdinfo?
What OS revision do you have?
Have you tried it with dvd-r media? (Advdinfo apparently doesn't work with dvd+rw).
Fire up nero info tool, go to the ASPI tab, and check what it thinks for "System ASPI"
and also "Nero ASPI".

CMC00R G200 is exactly what I see when I run advdinfo on memorex dvd-r media.
khypermedia = memorex ?

BTW, the memorex media worked fine for me with nero and recordnow (bundled version), using
the dru500 with 1.0c firmware.

I was in the middle of typing a reply and answering your questions.
I got to the part where you asked me to fire up Info Tool.
It started to detect all my CD/DVD drives. About three drives in, it blue screened me and caused the PC to reboot! So no more InfoTool for me..,

So I'll start my reply from scratch :(

I get an error dialog box containing the following verbatim:
ASPI command returned:
SenseKey 05h; ASC 24h; ASCQ 00h.

I have Win XP Pro SP1.

Yes, I have tried it with DVD-R media.

I have been using my DVD-ROM (which does read DVD-R media) drive as the reader when using ADVDINfo; maybe I should try it with the
DRU-500A? Hope this program is safe though?

I used the 'Media ID' option. Is that the right one (I also tried any and all other options that might be to identify the media, but they either returned the ASPI SenseKey errors or came up with all 00000s (i.e no info returned).

I am running ADVDINfo with the Nero ASPI (wnaspi32.dll) copied into the ADVDInfo directory.

Thanks for the effort to help so far!

Ouch. Maybe nero can't handle probing so many drives at once.
I thought XP wasn't supposed to blue screen :)

I am running Advdinfo with WinXP SP1 also. It did not work for me with the stock
ASPI layer from windows. I did have to copy nero's WNASPI32.dll to the directory where
ADVDinfo resides before it would work. Without the nero aspi, it fails with the error
"Could not create Device list". You seem to be getting further than that.

06 - Media id is the wrong option. I get the same error you do if I try that option.
You should select 0E - Pre-Recorded Information in Lead-In.

Win XP Bluescreen and Fuji Film DVD+R

Postby BBWoof on Sun Nov 17, 2002 4:15 am

In my experience Win XP is quite good at doing a BSOD. I think I got one earlier today and now I can't play a dvd out of the Sony Drive. But my system will play an image of a dvd, go figure.

I haven't noticed anybody mentioning the Fuji Film DVD+R media. I've burned about 10 of them so far with RecordNowMax 4.5 and the 1.0d firmware.

NERO: 5.5.9.14? (I think this is the version) I tried doing a simulation several times with different +R media, and the disk is unusable afterwards (this sort of upset me). I tried to do a test in RecordNowMax and it tells me that the drive isn't capable of testing. But hey, at least the disk I had in the drive still works.

Well, I've tried one more brand and had success. Noticed in the ad for CompUSA they had TDK DVD-R 4 packs for $8.99 out the door, while not extremely cheap, it was for a b&m. They were labeled as 2x so I bought 3 packs. Burned one, came out just fine and played on everything. Just a heads up to everyone in case they missed the price on that one.

Yes, XP is very stable; I am very satisfied with it.
The occasional blue screen does occur, but very rarely...

Yes, as I mentioned, I am also using the Nero ASPI with ADVDINfo.

It is working for me too then, since I think I used that option (pre-rec info in lead-in) sucessfully, but there didn't seem to be any data returned?
I will try again at home tonight and look at the results more carefully.

Bac,

I think the memorex dvd-r is the same same as khypermedia's. I went out and bought the memorex dvd-r and ran Advdinfo. It shows up the same code as khypermedia. In addition, the memorex dvd-r did not work. It crashed halfway through my movie backup using nero 5.5.9.17 & firmware 1.0d

Yes, both vendors are using CMC Magnetics manufactured disks. They apparently don't
have a very good reputation.
However, I and others have burned memorex dvd-r just fine. I've burned two of those
(unfortunately only at 1X). My burn attempts were with nero and firmware 1.0c.

Veff,
there is now another choice if getting advdinfo to work is too complicated.

Download the latest dvddecrypter (dvddecryter.com).
Select the drive, select Mode->ISO->R
On the right hand side, look at the "Manufacturer ID:" field.

Thanks for the info/tip bac.
I'll check ADVDInfo tonight. If it doesn't give me what I need, I will try DVD Decrypter instead, to determine the media type.

1. I had sever problems with Memorex 4.7GB DVD-RW (drive does not refuses to recognize the media

2. some errors when writing to SmartDisk DVD-R Media (may have been a buffering problem though, the media was recognized no problem) - hope a future firmware upgrade will help (I am currently on 1d)

3. No problems with Verbatim 2.4 DVD-+RWs
