Has anyone run Smart Burn on the Memorex 48x discs? Will they go to 52x ?

Either CMC or TY. I'm not fussy.
The 52x cd-r that shipped with my 52x24x52x Lite On was CMC and 100% error free at full speed.

i went to my Best buy store and saw some MEmorex media made in India, does anybody know where these were made????, i picked up the Taiwanese made discs instead (there were no TY of course). Another question, what is the difference in the MEmorex "black" media and why do they cost more. Thanks in ADVANCE!!!

Probably made by Moser Baer-a large cd-r producer in India. They're getting hammered over at www.cdfreaks.com 's forums. They seem to have taken over from CMC as the worst discs ever.

Personally, I've had great results with CMC. Some people have had terrible results with CMC.

Imation CMC disc are some of the better discs around. However, there is a big difference between high and low quality CMC disc.

As for the Memorex Black CD-R's, the only difference is the recording surface is black colored. They look very similar to Playstation 1 game CD's that were black on the bottom. It's only a color difference, so your best bet is to stick with regular Memorex CD-R's unless you want that special black color.

Actually, I don't think the recording surface is black, only the plastic covering the recording surface is black. The actual dye used is pthalocyanine, therefore the recording surface is silver. The only good thing about black discs is that they look cool, although I would only buy them if they were sold at a rock-bottom price...otherwise just stick to regular silver discs.

You could be right. I've only seen the underside for a brief moment and didn't really examine them all that close. Black CD-R's are only for the "cool" factor.

Iwas speaking from experience because I have some PNY black CD-R's that are basically Ritek discs using pthalocyanine and then covered using black plastic instead of clear plastic.

I doubt that the Digital Research CDRW is a Lite-on. The picture on the front of the box doesn't have the standard Lite-on look (two LED's instead of one), plus (correct me if I'm wrong) most companies who rebadge Lite-ons stick to the original speed ratings of the drive, and I don't think Lite-on produced a 48x16x48.

Some companies originally were shipping Lite-On's in their boxes. However, some of these companies decided to change the supplier of their CD-RW drives to Benq and other companies. So it's really a crap shot sometimes in determining what drive your actually buying. Another example of this practice is with Cendyne drives. Half of their stock is Lite-On drives, while the rest are drives made from an assortment of companies. But with Cendyne, you can check the model # on the back of the box to see what drive your really purchasing.

If you do pruchase this drive and it's not a Lite-On, just simply return it and go buy the BUSlink 52x24x52 at Compusa since its a much better deal at $49.99. This BUSlink drive is 100% Lite-On.

Too late for me...I just bought the Lite-on 48x24x48 (48246S) from Newegg for $59. Wish I'd known about the Buslinks for $49...oh well, I'll feel better after I flash mine to a 52x.
