Cant record at maximum speed

hello guys
I have a new samsung CD RW 240B, this CDRW are supposed to record at 40x, but when I check the speed record at the Easy Cd creator Software, the speed goes from 10x to 20-25 x, it never goes to 40x.
What could be wrong with my CDRW.
My computer is a pentium IV 2 Ghz, 128 RAM, I have the last firmware, Im using windows Me and a 8I533 Gigabyte Motherboard.
My Hard Disk is a 40 GB, and I have a lot of free space.
It is normal that the speed goes from one value to another ?

What media are you using? If I remember correctly, that drive was a little picky about what media would work at 40x.

Im using TDK CD-R 80 (700 MB) and TDK gold 80 minutes too.
It seems that you know a lot about this CDRW.
It is normal that the speed record goes from one value to another ?
Did you see this on other CD RW ?

As per the media, I don't find anything wrong with the media you are using. Maybe try some more different types, try some Verbatim.

Are you using Nero? If so you could see if it's the media by switching off JustSpeed. How's this done?

If you go to this screen:



And click Advanced, and uncheck "JustSpeed enabled" you'll be able to write all media at 40x.

Now, if the writer is still writing at 25x, then you have some other problem. If it now writes at full speed you'll need to get some different media, or just run the drive with the JustSpeed feature disabled (that shouldn't be a problem with this particular drive and the discs you're using). Or you could try updating the firmware to the latest version.

If the speed is still slow, the most likely problem is your IDE port, either it's too slow (common on some cheaper motherboards) or DMA is not enabled (this is in the advanced properties of the IDE device driver).

Try running CD-Speed, which will have come with Nero, with an original pressed data CD of at least 60 minutes. See if the speed goes up to 30x/40x or whether it levels out at 20x -- if that's happening then the IDE drivers are not setup, or your hardware is suspect.

You don't have to uninstall EasyCd creator to run Nero. You can have both installed as long as they're not being used at the same time.
As per the media changing speeds, yes its normal for the drive to change speeds, because it doesn't start off by writing at 40x, it gradually increases speed.
Different media, switching off JustSpeed as jase said, should do the trick. Looks like you have never used Nero on this drive to burn, maybe try a burn with JustSpeed enabled to see if the problem is in EasyCDcreator.
Then try one with it disabled....

I tried with Nero and TDK CDR 80 min 700 MB 40 x supported.

The status window showed me that the CD were burned at 40 x.

It takes 4.02 minutes to save 699 MB, all of them MP3, is a good time?.
I burned another CD (Visual Studio Net CD # 1) and it takes 25 minutes.
Maybe because Visual Studio CD # 1 has at least 9500 files.
Both info (MP3 and VSNet) were on the Hard Disk.

Any more comments will be apreciatted

it doesn't matter how many files one burn it, compared to another, you should always use Disc At Once recording method, and it is normal for the tdk to auto adjust the write speed

Hi every one,

I have the same problem: I can´t burn at max speed with my LG 8400B 40x12x40,even Ithink my max burn speed is only 24x
I have DMA access ON in the Channel IDE.
LG 8400B is set to MASTER and DVD-ROM is set to SLAVE both units in the same IDE.
My PC is Win2000 Professional, Pentium IV 1.8 Ghz, 512MB DDR RAM, and a 7200rpm HD drive. I use nero 5.9.9.17.

Should I give you more info or should I update firmware from 1.02 to 1.04?

Please help me.

The media I used was TraxData 48x 80 minutes Silver CD-R

Is this a good media to use Ian?

P.S I thinK TraxData it ISN´T a good media because in my case I could only burned at 20x instead of 40X

I haven't used a lot of Traxdata media. However, I will say that even if a disc says it will write at 48x, it doesn't mean it will do that with all drives.

Finally, just one explanation, if NeroInfo Tool reports DMA on in all my drives (H.D, DVD, CD-RW) and in the Primary & Secondary IDE Channel on Win2000 I have selected "DMA if avalaible" and in the Nero CD Speed I got almost 40x on read test in both DVD and CD-RW units, can I be sure that my DMA is really ON?

That is pretty conclusive. The one additional thing to check would be CPU usage while you are getting 40x read transfer speeds. If it is just a few percent, then you surely have DMA enabled okay.

Once I burned a CD with 15000 little files and tooks a lot of time.
If I burned a CD in 4.02 Minutes (MP3) and the other one in 25 Minutes, does exist something wrong with my CD RW ?
Ive burned tonight about 5 CDs with MP3 and all of them were burned in aprox. 4 minutes.

I've never burned 15,000 small files. Wow! To answer your question, yes, burning many small files could slow down the whole process, particularly if your hard drive is fragmented, or even if it isn't but the files are scattered all over the place on your hard drive. In this case the hard drive has to perform excessive numbers of seek operations. A hard drive can seek faster than an optical drive, but even a hard drive seek is a time-consuming operation, and if your drive is forced to do enough seeks it will definitely slow down the overall transfer rate.

I can't say for sure whether or not 15,000 seeks alone would account for a 25-minute burn - that feels a little long. However, it is possible that the seeks slowed down the data transfer enough that the CD-RW drive had to constantly invoke buffer underrun protection, which slowed down the burning process even further.

In my opinion, your CD-RW drive is probably healthy, and it was the many small files that slowed down your burn. You might try adjusting the small file buffer size next time - that might speed things up a little.

i once burned a CD of about 700MB of data, spread onto something like 4000 files or so. using Nero.

the caching of small files at the start of the burn took about 1 minute!

after that, the actual burn took about the same time as a regular burn (of same amount of data but in a few large files).

25 sounds too much, don't think it was because of the number of files. well, not just that anyway.
maybe some other problem - DMA, media ?

The problem was only a bad or low quality media.
TraxData x48 CD-R really suck, because I could only wrote at 20X

I did many other tests on other media and had success at 32X and 40X with:
Acer Gold/AC 80min 24X..................40X
Acer Gold/AC 80min 40X..................40X
HP/TY 80min 24X.........................40X
Princo/PC 80min 48X.....................32X
