Most of the problems I've seen with the Sony are software and/or user problems. Yeah there is a media problem with the Mitsubishi/Verbatim media but Sony has acknowledged this.

Ian,

I think after speaking about 4X burners and your DRU-500A review, that you temporarily forgot that the Pioneer A03 and A04 he specifically refers to burning his media at 2X with, are only a 2X burners :)

However, I would love to see if the upcoming A05 can actually burn this media at 4X!!!!!!
That will be the true test.

lol

I am surprised I am coherent today:
I was out from 11:30 AM Saturday till 3:05 AM today, and drove a total of about 300 miles during that time period; this was after going to bed very late a few times in the days preceding it and getting 3 - 4 hours of sleep a night for two nights.
Then today, I woke up at 8 after going to bed after 4 AM...

One day it will catch up to me, if it hasn't already.
But hey my motto does say "Life is short; enjoy it :)"

There is no such thing as the DRU-400A; the model name is DRU-500A.
There is a typo somewhere on the web saying DRU-400A instead of DRU-500A, because I remember seeing it too.

Actually it will be able to burn DVD-R at 4X (not 3.1X), but only once the media that supports 4X burning becomes available...

ya that was my typo, the 4 and 5 are so close to each other. I have the DRU-500A in my room. in Nero it says that it only burns DVD-R Media @ 3.1x but then again i heard this drive is not supported by Nero so umm "whatever" :)

Yeah, with earlier builds of Nero, it was reporting the writing speeds incorrectly. Like DVD+R/RW media at 2.5x. I didn't see any problems with DVD-R media, but who knows. Nero 5.5.9.17 was supposed to fix that anyway.

Get Nero 5.5.9.1.7 - it supports the drive (better at least).
The previous version of Nero was reporting the wrong CD burning speed too (17X instead of 24X I believe)

4x media on ebay (judysdeals)

Postby als on Wed Nov 27, 2002 12:54 am

I have the pioneer A05 & bought some of that "4x dvd-r media" on garbay. It does Not burn at 4x let alone 2x. My other generic media does burn at 2x fine. The email I got back said that it wouldn't do 4x, or 2x. Said the A04 will do at 2x, Some at 4x. I find this hard to believe, that the older model A04 will do these at 2x~4x & the new A05 Not. At any rate, I have used Easycd 5.32 & Nero 5517 just fine at 2x with my better media. Also dvd decrypter to make & burn images. Stay away from the ebay 4x DVD-R media unless you want 1x media.
