Question about writing speed

Postby Alexandrus on Thu Jan 01, 1970 6:39 am

I have a Plextor 48/24/48 CDRW and I have owned all previous Plextor CDRW drives starting with the 24/10/40 CDRW and I have a question : why does Nero never display the actual writing speed when burning a disc ?
It always says : Writing at xxxxx, the exact speed I selected, even though it writes at a lower speed or even in P-CAV mode, when the speed changes constantly, my drives always display the selected speed, not the actual speed.
I have updated ASPI to 4.72, I have tried everything and still no go.
My friend has a LITE-ON 40/12/48 and his Nero displays the actual writing speed, unlike the Plextor drives I have.

Any thoughts ?

the behaviour you describe - that is correct.
however there is a registry trick that can "correct" this, make Nero show the actual burning speed.
look here:

Thanks man, thanks a lot.
What I still don't get is how my friend's Nero showed him the actual speed since he has no idea how to do the trick or anything, he knows even less about CDRW drives than me.

Well, I reinstalled Win98SE, did the trick and now it won't work again. Maybe I need ASPI 4.7x installed, what do you think ?
Oh, and could it be because I changed the CDRW drive and now there are two drives in the CDRW list in the registry ?

yes. it's probably because you changed the drive.
no, you don't need Adaptec ASPI.

also, from the original thread on this registry hack, it seems you have to burn at least once before you can do this trick. only then does this registry key exist and then you can change it.

also, you changed the CDRW drive. in that thread you can read reports of some people that this trick didn't work for them. apparently it does not work on some drives.

I have changed the Plextor 48/24/48 with the LITE-ON 52/24/52, and the list of recorders in the registry had two drives, I guess I should have deleted the Plextor then.
Anyway, I'll try again with the Plextor and see if it works and then with the LITE-ON again.

i think this registry hack should work with both the Plextor and the Lite On drives.

i don't think you need to delete the Plextor from the registry.
just burn at least once with the Lite-On, and then go change that key again to 1 to have Nero show the real burning speed (you need to burn at least once before you can do this trick).

Well, tried it and still no go. Every time I start Nero it sets the value of the ShowSingleRecorderSpeed to 0 instead of 1. :( :-?
