Anyone know if TDK's 48X drive can be upgraded to 52X through firmware?

I noticed no 52x CD read speed. Its a 52x24x48x CD-RW. I wonder why when 52x CD read speeds are out?

My Bad. I thought TDK was going to use Lite-On's 52x24x52 CD-RW drive. Wierd how TDK decided not to use Lite-On's fastest drive. Does anyone know whether this TDK drive is made by Lite-On or by someone else?

This is very interesting as there are no drives out there with specs of 52x24x48x. So I don't know where TDK got this drive from  . Maybe it is a Lite-On (but still doesnt make sense cuz lite-on has a 52x24x52x :P )

Just noticed this too...I'm sure it's a Lite-On...

Postby scottm on Tue Nov 05, 2002 11:21 pm

I think it's pretty simple...it's a Lite-On but TDK being a little conservative that they are, suppresses the read/rip speed (especially the rip speed). Hey...they don't wanna be blamed when the disc spins itself into a million pieces ;)

Should be very interesting to check out their DVD burner (Indi--how cute) and Headphone suite....and their new Mojo sure looks like an I-River product to me!

yeah i put the price tags for the new tdk's on the shelf at best buy, last week

so should be getting them maybe this weekend, there on order from warehouse

but remember, the latest plextor says it does 48x read speed, only when you hold the eject button down for like 3 seconds, so maybe tdk is doing the same thing

i plan on buying the new tdk asap, my tray on my 48x liteon is starting to sound like its putting on age, makes non-normal sounds when opening and closing, i don't expect more from it, considering its been used hard as hell

Regular price since most of us can't get the employee discounted price anyways.

Well I bought the 52 Buslink there that is a Liteon and it was and probably still is 79 bucks and may have a rebate by now. I like the blue tray on the TDK and their bundle of goodies is usually better, but not 129 worth. Now if it's pretty close in price, I might have gotten it instead because of their extras :)
More then likely it does read at 52, they just don't want to push it.
By the way the tray on the 52 seems a bit quieter then the earlier ones, seems to be made the same though.

I thought the same in the beginning but then I feel that isn't there a greater chance of a CD breaking while burning rather than reading?? So logically speaking specs like 48x24x52x make more sense don't they??

Likely, it's just the webmaster only changing the burn speed, as he or she has been accustomed to do.

Probably since you can upgrade their 48x to a Lite-On 52x.

I guess we'll have to wait for the TDK 52x firmware if you want the TDK drive to be identified as a TDK drive under Nero.

Does anyone have the step by step procedure to upgrade the TDK 48x to the Lite-On 52X? Or if it was in a previous thread, a link would be helpful.

wouldn't the 48x tdk have to have version 6 of the mediatek chip?

The drive is based on Lite-On's 6th generation drive design.. not version 6 of the mediatek chipset.

No problem. It's a common misunderstanding.
