No the drives do not need to be the same speed, but it will only record at the maximum speed of the lower speed drive for both drives. Nice feature if you are burning from an image on your hard drive that can keep both drives away from the buffer underrun protection which will increase burn times. It does work for on-the-fly copying too, but the read drive needs to fly to keep both drives busy.
