Lkg for Prodisc 2X DVD-R (work w/ DRU500A) no longer sold :(

Postby VEFF on Thu Jan 01, 1970 6:33 am

I am looking for Prodisc 2X DVD-R for about $1.50 or $1.60 a piece in units of 25 or 50 if anyone can help.
I have found them for $150 for 100, but that is too many for me, since I want to use 4X DVD-R media when it comes out in December...

My brother bought some at Rima just a couple of months ago.
He paid only $1.50 each for 20 or 25.
Unfortunately rima stopped selling them :(
The cheapest I can find 25 or 50 at now is $1.89/piece for 50 and $1.99 a piece for 25... + shipping

I burned one on my DRU-500A and it was successful at 2X :)
The resulting disc plays great on my Toshiba home DVD changer, Apex DVD player and Xbox.

I would be very grateful if anyone can help.

First, let me say I KNOW that the media I am about to mention are NOT Prodisc, but DO burn at 2x, so thought they MAY be worth mention to you...

http://www.hypermicro.com/ has RITEK media (it at least burns at 2x in the Pioneer 104) for max/min each of $1.25/$1.07.

Visit http://www.storagereview.com for info on free shipping

Hope I could be of help...

Thanks; I just wonder if they would burn at 2X on the Sony DRU-500A though...
I have seen the same Ritek for $1 a piece for 50 with free shipping, although I prefer to get 30 or so, since I am only using these till 4X comes out and is reasonable in price...

If anyone has burned Ritek at 2X in the DRU-500A, please let us know.

Ended up getting 30 Prodisc 2X DVD-Rs for $60 + $5.80 shipping.

That should hopefully be enough till 4X media comes out...

I'm sure Hypermicro would have been glad to answer "yay" or "nay" to your question had you actually bothered to take the moment out of your time to ask 'em...

Can't say about Prodisc vs. Ritek quality, but I can say your Prodisc media cost ya over 75% more...

Hyper is very good about making it clear what does/n't work with what, which is why they mention the firmware upgrade necessity to burn the Ritek at 2x on the 104... (Pioneer was picky, only allowing their own media (and maybe Verbatim's???) to burn at 2x, causing many owners to complain...)

So, if the Ritek doesn't burn at 2x in the Sony, it's not a media issue... It's a non-conformity issue on the burner's part...

And you did say the Prodisc burns at 2x already, right?

Hmmm, seems you already answered yourself? :-?

Though, like I said, perhaps the Prodisc is better-quality media...

Thanks for the feedback :)

Well, the reason I didn't ask hyper (other than not thinking about it at the time and being so busy in my search at so many sites and reading so many posts that I would have forgotten anyway) is that the Ritek DVD-Rs are 1X rated and the Prodisc are 2X rated (according to the web site definitions).
Also since the drive is so new, the vendors themselves don't know yet exactly what works and what doesn't.

I did find some Ritek 2X today at a vendor I just read about today (nobody else seems to have them), but they are only a bit cheaper than the Prodisc 2X ($1.80 versus $2 each).

I will ask hypermicro (or another vendor) if the 1X Ritek can somehow be burned at 2X; that would be nice :)

Nobody seems to have done so or tried it (I posted a msg at vcdhelp.com in their DRU-500A media post).

I think Eric (ewitte) is going to try today.

I have been informed by a media vendor that 4X Princo are close to being ready; hopefully the Sony will work with these, or issue a firmware upgrade to do so. They are sending me a free sample of 2X Princo to try out, since they were a bit surprised that the DRU-500A could write the Prodisc at 2X, since it is a Pionner-only innovation, officially at least).

I am really waiting for 4X Ritek, since they seem to be more highly regarded than Princo, while still being reasonably-priced...

Yes, Prodisc is very good it seems. They passed Pioneer's stringent testing

PS: Just noticed what you said about the price.
The Prodisc are 2X, not 1X like the Ritek at hypermicro. The Prodisc 2X only cost a bit over 10% more than 2X Ritek ($2 versus $1.80).

Yes, if I wanted 1X media, I could have bought 1X Ritek and saved a bundle (seen them as low as $50 shipped for 50).

The Ritek DVD-R that Hypermicro sells IS 2x certified; I mentioned that fact, and Hyper clearly says that.

So, frankly, I dunno what you are talking about(?)

Do you?

I think that 2X rating for Pioneer burners officially, but so is the 2X on other DVD-R media I guess, so I will probably try some from Hypermicro :)
Thanks for being persistent lol.

And no, I don't know what I am talking about lol; especially at 12:45 AM.
Time for bed, and hopefuly better luck (see new post about Prodisc not working and Princo working, from a few minutes ago) with media, since even a brand that used to work, may not work if
they changed their manufactuing process and/or disc design

True on the manu. process/design issue, but a reputable reseller would catch that, or at least when notified of such, would pass that info on to buyers BEFORE they purchase...

But, simply put, if you take the time to ask 'em questions, they won't let ya screw yourself...

But, yes, I tend to be persistent when I really feel I am attempting to offer someone a better option than the one they are currently considering...

Yeah, I admit it bugs me to read you paid more and got screwed... :-?

Believe me, I'm not laughin' at ya, Veff... :(

Actually I did check the vendor's site for compatiblity
Ironically the vendor recommended Prodisc and Ritek for the DRU-500A
and said that Princo was not compatible. (The end results as you know from my posts were exactly the opposite as far as Princo and Prodisc are concerned)!!!!
He was also honest about the fact that the Prodisc were only officially 2X for the Pioneer burners.
Once I told the guy (very nice and quick to respond) that I had success at burning the Prodisc at 2X that my bother had lying around he was very surprised and sent me a free Princo 2X to try out (that is the one that worked nicely).

Anyway, I appreciate your efforts to help!

Now I am really going to bed!! Havne't been up this late in ages; going to
have a rought day tomorrow oops today!!!!

Well, I am trading the remaining Prodisc for Princo, which due to their lower price I can get the same amount of, since I can't return the coasters.
The return shipping was under $6, because the place is so close; it will only take 1 day too :)

Can't wait to get the 2X Princo, since I know it works fine,
based on the sample he sent me :)

As an added bonus, coincidentally, while looking for an empty container or spindle to use to ship the non-working media back to the vendor, I found an old spindle containing 15 DVDPro 1X DVD-R blanks :) I had used many of those with my prior Panasonic DVD-R burner.

So I can burn right now :)
