I'm sure Hypermicro would have been glad to answer "yay" or "nay" to your question had you actually bothered to take the moment out of your time to ask 'em...
Can't say about Prodisc vs. Ritek quality, but I can say your Prodisc media cost ya over 75% more...
Hyper is very good about making it clear what does/n't work with what, which is why they mention the firmware upgrade necessity to burn the Ritek at 2x on the 104... (Pioneer was picky, only allowing their own media (and maybe Verbatim's???) to burn at 2x, causing many owners to complain...)
So, if the Ritek doesn't burn at 2x in the Sony, it's not a media issue... It's a non-conformity issue on the burner's part...
And you did say the Prodisc burns at 2x already, right?
Hmmm, seems you already answered yourself?
Though, like I said, perhaps the Prodisc is better-quality media...
Thanks for the feedback
Well, the reason I didn't ask hyper (other than not thinking about it at the time and being so busy in my search at so many sites and reading so many posts that I would have forgotten anyway) is that the Ritek DVD-Rs are 1X rated and the Prodisc are 2X rated (according to the web site definitions).
Also since the drive is so new, the vendors themselves don't know yet exactly what works and what doesn't.
I did find some Ritek 2X today at a vendor I just read about today (nobody else seems to have them), but they are only a bit cheaper than the Prodisc 2X ($1.80 versus $2 each).
I will ask hypermicro (or another vendor) if the 1X Ritek can somehow be burned at 2X; that would be nice
Nobody seems to have done so or tried it (I posted a msg at vcdhelp.com in their DRU-500A media post).
I think Eric (ewitte) is going to try today.
I have been informed by a media vendor that 4X Princo are close to being ready; hopefully the Sony will work with these, or issue a firmware upgrade to do so. They are sending me a free sample of 2X Princo to try out, since they were a bit surprised that the DRU-500A could write the Prodisc at 2X, since it is a Pionner-only innovation, officially at least).
I am really waiting for 4X Ritek, since they seem to be more highly regarded than Princo, while still being reasonably-priced...
Yes, Prodisc is very good it seems. They passed Pioneer's stringent testing
PS: Just noticed what you said about the price.
The Prodisc are 2X, not 1X like the Ritek at hypermicro. The Prodisc 2X only cost a bit over 10% more than 2X Ritek ($2 versus $1.80).
Yes, if I wanted 1X media, I could have bought 1X Ritek and saved a bundle (seen them as low as $50 shipped for 50).
