Thanksgiving Sales strategy.

First of all, I'm Canadian.

I'll be in Florida for the USA Thanksgiving Holiday.

I'll be watching the local papers for ads for the big 3 stores (Best Buy, Circuit City & CompUSA).

Can someone tell me when the sales usually are? I gather the stores are closed on the actual holiday and the sales are the next day. Is that right?

And should I plan to be in line starting about 4am or so?

Post-Thanksgiving sales always occur on Friday after Thanksgiving. This year the date will be 11/29/02. Also these special sales start insanely early, so get a good nite's rest if you don't want to miss out. No need to wait at 4AM if the sales suck. I say only what that early if there's a deal that you must have and need to be there early. Otherwise, anything earlier than 6 or 7AM is just a waste. Happy shopping and good luck.

They are the very next day and if you want the best stuff get up early and bring some friends. I have gotten some very good deals by getting up and hitting the place with what I want just as they open. We got one person in line then the other went around and found more deals while the checkout line was inching along. It's the biggest shopping day of the year over here so be prepared to blow the day at the place with the best deals for what you want, the good stuff goes early on.

a) sales aren't much different from any other day
b) you can't find a parking spot for 3 miles
c) checkout lines are 15 minutes long.

But hey, if you don't have this experience where you're from, just don't think everyone is this pushy when shopping on normal days. Based on the crowds you'd think everything is free.

I totally agree with everything Boone said. Retail stores are like mad houses, the friday after Thanksgiving. A few years ago, I experienced waking up at 5AM and standing out in long lines during the early hours of the morning waiting for stores to open at 7,8, or 9AM. It's no fun waiting and its also very COLD out. Ever since that, I've just decided to sleep in. Most of the time, the item your waiting in line for is usually sold out because the store didn't stock enough or the other "insane" people waiting there for it bought them all already.

After the early morning crush, I was planning on driving from Lakeland Florida, down to Key West for 2 days to relax and get drunk. Should I get drunk 1st, then go shopping?

I've experienced Boxing Day, it's not pretty.

But then, we don't get the deals the USA does either.

I was hoping to pick up 3 or 4 spindles of Fuji's for about $10-$15 USD each (no mail in rebates). They sell for $50 CDN up here. If there's a mail in rebate, even better.

I'm also looking at a Digital Camera.

Southern California in the LA area and Orange County has been in the low 60's during the day. In the mornings, its been 40's-50's. That's cold for us. Not fun when California is supposed to be nice and warm. I remember the last few October's here were in the 70's-80's. By the time Thanksgiving comes along, I'm sure it'll be colder in the morning and not worth my time to stand out in a long, boring line. I suppose Florida should be alittle warmer than here.

I did that last year at Best Buy, where I live its almost a tradition to get to the story early and wait 2 hours before they open. At the local Toys R Us they had people start lineing up (with thier kids) at 3am. No way in Hell I was going there.

You better be prepared (bring the circular), get to bed early, wear conforable shoes and clothes, get to the store early, bring combat gear and paintguns to blast any jerk who grabbed the last Geforce 4 off the rack...aah anyone seen that movie "The Toy??"

Its like that sometimes, at least here in Texas where we love a good deal and do anything to get it.

Last year I snagged a 16X Digital Research CD-RW for $30 which was a BTC drive I later gave to my brother, a HP digital camera for $100, and a Mintek DVD player for $70..also bought a couple DVD's on sale too. I just rushed through the store with my cart, grabbed what I wanted and headed to the checkout. I dont know if im going to do that this year, just have to wait and see what they have on sale. With the enconomy in such bad shape and superstores wanting to get customers in their stores, Im betting there will be some great deals.

I am going to go to bed at 5 pm or earlier and wake up at 2 am or earlier. If the deals are good i may go. Maybe i should go wait outside the stores at 2 am or earlier if its a really good deal with *No mail in Rebates*

I just hope its cool like 50 to 60 degrees. Shot to bad i don't have a laptop i could play games while waiting. That would be cool if i had to wait for a good deal and get their 5 to 10 hours before the store opened. But remember thats only if they have a good deal like 100 pack of Fuji TY media for $1 or $5 with no mail in rebates or something like that. Or a CD-RW drive for $20 or $30 with no mail in rebates ,etc.

At the Best Buy sale I went to they had a 100 pack of PNY 80 minute (I think they were 16X speed rated) for like $4.99 that morning. I didnt buy them because I had problems with some 12X that I bought earlier that year- they didnt like the Sony 12X I was using at the time.

Best Buy is always discounting CD-R's so im sure something will be on sale that day.

There was a deal on them about this same time last year too.

I think it was was $19.00 after an instant rebate & 1 mail in rebate.

About a month later (around Thanksgiving too) they were down to about $5.00 or so. The instant rebate was massive.

I've still got about 30 of them left. At the time it was a box of 110.

Oh yes, there are most certainly deals on the day after. You have to buy the paper on Thanksgiving Day, where you will find inserts for the early-bird and three-day specials.

does anybody have an opinion about the 50 pack of the verbatim datalife for $12.99 @ target this week... is that a good price? are they better than ty? the kodaks? thanks in advance...

The data life is the best out there, IMO. I wouldn't buy the value life as they're made by either ritek or CMC.. i forget which.

Verbatim is the best for my burner, but TY is not far behind... so if I find a deal on verbatims I would buy em because Verbatim deals seem few and far between (unlike TY deals which happen every couple of weeks)
