4X DVD-R media on ebay; has anyone tried it?

Postby VEFF on Thu Jan 01, 1970 6:26 am

Now that I have one of my DRU-500As (the other just shipped yesterday, so I will return one of the two still sealed, since I don't need both), I wanted to get some 4X DVD-R media.

The ONLY place I could find any is ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1773722576

The thing is:
1) It is not a (known) name brand.
2) Due to the fact that I haven't seen this particular 4X DVD-R media, or any other 4X DVD-R media anywhere else, I wonder if it will really write at 4X (on the DRU-500A), and how reliable it might be.

Has anyone tried these?

I might just buy a small quantity of 2X DVD-R to tie me over till better known 4X DVD-R media comes out.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

I just got cheap 1x media to tide me over. The prices of 2x and 4x need to be below $1.50 for me to consider. The 25 pack of Ritek's I got have not given me a single problem. I believe it was $27.95 including shipping. It has been taking longer for me to find 4+GB of data I would like to burn than it actually takes to burn :) If I create something in MyDVD it takes quite a bit of time to process.

Thanks for the info on the Ritek media; are you using RecordNow?
I am having problems with DVDPro (bought a few back from my brother
for the time being); but it could be the controller card or software?

I bought a ProDisc 2X from him to try.

Then I may buy some Ritek...

Sorry, I am returning it still sealed to the place of purchase (only bought it yesterday) tomorrow. No shipping involved.

You can buy it at CompUSA, BestBuy, Circuit City already, so I assume you don't live near those stores?
I have seen them on ebay if you are interested.
They are going for a high price though, but that is only because of the temporary short supply; then they should drop...
Dell will probably also start shipping them faster and faster as supply increases and demand settles down (the latter hopefully); they often have good sales (10 - 15% off) and if you have bought from them before they send you coupons for $off in the mail on the back of their brochures too...
That is how I got mine so cheap at the time...(although the base price [before coupons and discounts] at Dell has since gone up from $308 to $348).

I stopped using RecordNow after it started limiting me to 3.72GB. Even on the Sony +RW that came with the drive! I've been using Nero. The Ritek's do look cheap (no markings) but they do 1x good. And they can be found for around $1ea. I played them most of the way through on both my players without problems. I also did a direct copy back to the HDD to test integrity before I deleted the files off of the hard drive. If you spend a little more Primedisc has some in slim jewel cases that look prettier. They cost $1.39 in bulk. They are Ritek but I belive the quality control is a little better. I've only been able to find the single sided Primedisc's at one place. Most have only dual sided.

Eric

UPDATE. I checked the place where I got the Ritek's. They now have the 2x media that look "prettier" and come in a spindle. The 25 pack is .99ea but the 100 pack is only .85ea!! I've not teasted these though.

Where did you order them from; of you don't mind sharing?
If not it's ok.

Are you saying the Ritek blanks that burn at 2X even though they aren't labeled as such, or are there now official 2X Ritek for only a dollar a piece?

I don't plan to order more than 25, since I want to get 4X media.
If I finish the 25 before then, I'll simply order another 25 and so forth.

Crap. I checked. It just says "stable" 2x burn with "Pioneer". Not certified 2x burn. This is at http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/newspecrithi.html . Note I have not tried this media. I tried the one the looks cheaper. And actually I got mine at shop4tech. I ordered the BeAll media from the other site. I'm only finding 50 packs at shop4tech at the moment.

Thanks Eric.
Did you use gold or silver Riteks in the DRU-500A?
I noticed that there are two (or three) different types of Riteks for sale (at some sites). One is silver, one is gold, and the last apparently has a printable surface.

I am going to order some tonight.

Thanks. Ordering some today.
I am torn between Ritek, Accu or Princo, since they all work with the DRU-500A from what I can tell.
I'll check the different vendors and options now.

I burned a one of the TDKs last night as a DVD video disc of a home movie with RecordNow and it plays fine on my Toshiba home DVD changer :)

Dual Format Writer Incompatibily Causes DVD Media Price Reductions

Thanks for the great link.

Regarding the price reductions, I don't know about in-store price reductions. It seems to only be online price reductions, and even those
are for UK sites. I haven't seen any dramatic drop here yet, although I haven't been keeping a very close eye on every single brand:

I went to CompUSA first yesterday and bought two TDK DVD-Rs ($4 each) at CompUSA with my gift card. Nothing was cheaper than $4, not even the CompUSA house brand (it was also $4).
This was to hold me over till I get some online for about $1 a piece until 4X is available (much less in quantity of 100 though; below 70 cents).

I then went to Circuit City and Office Depot on the way home, and also checked out their prices.
CC's lowest price was $6 a piece and that was for relatively unknown STI brand. The rest were $7 - $8 in packs of 1 to 3.
Office Depot was about $8 a piece at best...

So CompUSA turned out to be the cheapest B&M (Brick and Mortar) for DVD-R, but $4 doesn't seem like prices being sliced?

TDKs have been $2.35 - $2.50 online for a while now...

I hope that the article turns out to be right though :)

I have been reading the site articles for some time. They were seriously discussing when and who were going to ship the media to UK and how prices would drop very soon. So far, they seem to provide most reliable and in-depth information on DVD media price - publicly I mean. It's true that the quoted web prices are only for inside UK but the sources are almost entirely from Taiwan.

I had seen these a while ago on ebay, but nobody seems to have tried them.
They also charge an exorbitant amount on shipping and handling for only 20 discs, but if it really works at 4X it is still a good deal.

I also would need to know if the DRU-500A would work with this media...

Has anyone burned Ritek or other 1X media at 2X on DRU-500A?

Postby VEFF on Thu Jan 01, 1970 6:34 am

I am about to order 2X Prodisc media for my DRU-500A, but they do cost much more than 1X discs (approaching double).

If anyone has burned Ritek or other 1X at 2X with the DRU-500A, I would like to know.

They say they can make it to 2x on Pioneer. It may be doable. If someone knows how to force Nero to 2x I'll try it for you.

Good question.

RecordNow only allows me to choose the maximum the drive supports. It appears to automatically switch depending on the media. Plus it only allows me to burn 3.72GB for some reason.

Eric,

I don't have the 3.72 GB limitation; luckily.
Not sure why you have that problem; are you burning off a FAT32 or off an NTFS partition?

I ended buying 30 Prodisc 2X DVD-R for $65 or $66 shipped ($2 a piece + shipping).
The site even mentioned the DRU-500A being compatible with Prodisc and Ritek, but NOT with Princo and the no-name brand 2X they offered.

Hopefully that will last me till 4X media comes out :)

It is NTFS. I can burn the full amount in Nero but RecordNow does not even with the Sony +RW that came with it. I'm going to try 5.5.9.17 tonight to see if I can get higher than 1X.

Thanks Eric; I ordered 30 Prodisc 2X DVD-Rs yesterday for $65.80 shipped; I now wonder whether Ritek could also burn at 2X in the
DRU-500A, since the Prodiscs are only supposed to burn at 2X in the Pioneer??

If the Riteks burn at 2X, I could have gotten more than three times as many DVD-R discs for only a few bucks more :(

But I only need enough until 4X media comes out anyway.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW

word up kids want to know the deal on this beautiful 4x crap... here is my email i got concerning this media

It will burn on the Sony at 1X only! The sony does not really burn at 4X and is a scam untill Sony releases the Media slated for Late December at $15 a pop. I would return it if possible and get a Pioneer A03 or A04 for less than $250 on ebay and you can burn at 2X all day with my media.. If you still would like some you can pick it up, you need to page me at xxx-xxx-xxxx

there is info all over the net about the problems with the Sony Drive, Check it out.

Thank You

That is a scam. So technically it can't write at 4x, even with the Pioneer drives.

Most of the problems I've seen with the Sony are software and/or user problems. Yeah there is a media problem with the Mitsubishi/Verbatim media but Sony has acknowledged this.
