Is there anyway to fully uninstall Internet Explorer so I can do a clean install of IE 6.0? I'm currently running Windows 98 with IE 5.5. I want to do a clean install because IE's content advisor keeps giving me problems and error messages.

I just tried to uninstall IE 5.5, but all windows does is revert back to an older version of IE. I just want to completely get rid of IE off my system.

Microsoft has done their best to prevent you from uninstalling IE. You will probably do best to just upgrade to IE 6.0 from where you are now and hope for the best. If it doesn't work out to your satisfaction, then maybe it will be time for more drastice measures. But, in general, you can't remove IE. The most you can do is remove the icon and some of the overt GUI features.

Yes it deals with parental controls on IE. The problem with my IE 5.5 was that the parent controls are set at disable. However, every so often, these settings become enabled and I can't look at any web-sites unless I type in a password to disable it. The parental controls were set awhile back, but ever since I've tried disabling it and it never stays disabled forever. That's why I figured uninstalling IE and doing a clean install of IE 6 would help.

Well, you certainly had the right idea in general - get rid of everything and start fresh. Unfortunately, with IE 5.0+, that probably means having to reinstall the OS.

There have been some guides published for disabling IE in Windows98, but I don't think even these could completely get rid of everything because of the way Microsoft intertwined IE with the OS internals. I still think your best next step is to upgrade to IE 6.0 and hope that it cleans up your problem.

Have you tried this to disable content advisor:

1. Right click the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop and click Properties.

2. Click the Content tab, click Disable and type your content adviser password and click OK until you return to windows.

One quick way to fix the content advisor prob is to delete the rating policies.

You could do the following:

WARNING: backup registry anytime you mess with it

go to start/run, type in 'regedit'

in the registry editor

go to hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\current
version\policies\

and delete the ratings folder

And all shall be sweet

OR

You could install the Win98 resource kit and more specifically the policy editor

As that key contains the stored password, settings and enable properties for the advisor it should not say information is missing. As long as the actual policy file is not messed with it should not give you that message. Just restart your computer and it should be disabled once again.

Thanks. Last night I was concentraing on searching the Microsoft knowledge base. But like you, I have often found it is often easier to go directly to Google, in spite of (or perhaps because of) its wider universe.

U could try start-run-regedit. Click edit-find, and search for all files for ie
(*.ie) when they show up-if they do-click del, then F3 to continue the search.
This is a serious move-so if u r not sure about your registry editor-leave it. But it should work.
